Hey There, Boo Boo: Five-Star Recruit "Yogi" Ferrell Commits to Indiana

Tom BaerNov 24, 2010

Junior point guard Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell of Park Tudor High (Indianapolis, Ind.) committed to Indiana University Wednesday night, marking the third five-star recruit who plans to call Assembly Hall home and play for head coach Tom Crean.

Ferrell, a 5'11" point guard ranked No. 17 in the class of 2012 by rivals.com, chose IU over Florida, Wake Forest, Butler and Virginia.

With this latest signing, Crean has now received nine commitments from in-state players (and 10 overall) since August of 2009.

In the Mike Davis and Kelvin Sampson eras, IU failed to land the state's best recruits (sans Eric Gordon). Much of the Hoosier State talent in the past several years, instead, landed in West Lafayette, helping Purdue rise to a perennial Big Ten and national power.

The days of Boiler recruiting dominance, however, appear over, as Crean has made enticing Indiana's best players to Bloomington a high priority.

Below is a complete list of commitments for the classes of 2011 through 2014:

Class of 2011
Cody Zeller, 6'10" PF, Washington, IN *****
Austin Etherington, 6'6" SF, Arcadia, IN ***

Class of 2012
Hanner Perea, 6'8" PF, La Porte, IN *****
Kevin Ferrell, 5'11" PG, Indianapolis, IN *****
Ron Patterson, 6'3" SG, Indianapolis, IN ****
Peter Jurkin, 6'11" C, Charlotte, NC ***

Class of 2013
Devin Davis, 6'5" SF, Indianapolis, IN ****
Collin Hartman, 6'6" SF, Indianapolis, IN ****

Class of 2014
Trey Lyles, 6'9" PF, Indianapolis, IN
James Blackmon, 6'2" PG, Fort Wayne, IN

If these commitments live up to expectations and Indiana's current players continue to improve and gain valuable experience, 2010-2011 could very well be IU's last season outside the NCAA Tournament for quite a while.

Welcome back in-state recruits...and welcome back Indiana basketball.
