Is Izzo a Better Coach Than Krzyzewski? Or Is Calipari The Best?
With Tom Izzo racking up the final fours, is the coach at Michigan St really better than the legend at Duke? Or does Calipari(the recruiter take the top spot?)
Why he Isn't(Coach K): National Championships. With ONE to Mike Krzyzewski's FOUR this helps show how wide the margin of championships is between these two. While Izzo has the recent final 4 lead, he doesn't have much to show for it. Last Season. Michigan ST starts the year off as #2, and Duke at #8. End of the year, the teams are both in the final 4, but Duke and Coach K do what they do, win titles, and Izzo does what he does, back out of Final Fours, and Duke takes home the title. MSU was Supposed to be better than Duke last year, but they weren't. Better job by Coach K.Tenure. Krzyzewski has been through it all, the tough times, West Point, ups and downs, and the illness, and still came through it all, and one day will be the NCAA leader in wins. Oh, and he doesn't have to shoot 100 free throws a day to be the top head coach in College Basketball.
Why he Is(Izzo):Final Fours. Recently Izzo has been to 6 of the past 12 final 4's. Not 7 in 13, or 6 in 11, but 6 in 12. That's what he has on Krzyzewski. Another point for Izzo would be that he does more with less talent, and that is a fair assessment. Izzo doesn't have the type of players that Krzyzewski has, but he sure as heck goes after them as much as Duke does. Does that mean Coach K recruits better? I'll leave that up to you to decide.
Calipari's The Best: He's not. Not even close.
The Verdict: Coach K. There is a reason he is the coach of the Olympics for the 2nd time in as many games. Yet, with these two teams squaring off in the Big10/ACC Challenge, with closely talented teams, we will see who the coach of America really is.
