Ryan Broekhoff will go to bed tonight a Valparaiso legend.
Not only did the forward go for 25 points and six rebounds, he netted this incredible game-winning shot against the Green Bay Phoenix to take the Crusaders to the Horizon League title game, where they'll play Wright State in the final.
How the Phoenix lost will, no doubt, come back to haunt many fans, as Green Bay led, 68-64, with just 14 seconds remaining. Especially given that when Alec Brown went to the line with just seconds to play, the Crusaders were out of timeouts.
Yet it would be Broekhoff who stood up and carried the ball down the court, most likely looking for a two-point bucket to tie the game and force overtime. And, given all that had transpired in the final minutes, that would have seemed like a great result for the Crusaders.
Some solid defense forced the forward outside the arc—where he had already made four three-pointers on the night—and well, the video tells the rest of the story.
Broekhoff's performance will take much of the glory away from an incredible Phoenix performance, having fought back gallantly after halftime. Keifer Skyes had 31 points, six assists and five rebounds, but ultimately, could not stop the final play of the game from ruining his night.
Ironically, Green Bay was only in the semifinals after their last-second three-pointer beat Illinois-Chicago just days earlier.
Valparaiso will play Wright State for the conference tourney title on Tuesday, after the Raiders beat Detroit with their own buzzer-beater to make the final as well.
