Duke-Maryland: Did the Terps Give Up When Duke Bombed Pearl Harbor?

Glenn PettyJan 25, 2009

No. 2 DUKE 85, MARYLAND 44 โ€“ Evidently, yes.

It was the Terps worse loss since they got waxed by Seton Hall back in 1941 during WWII.

Greivis Vasquez, Marylandโ€™s talented and volatile guard, told the Washington Post last week that Cameron was the perfect place to end his recent scoring slump. Not so. Vasquez, like the rest of his mates, couldnโ€™t hit the broad side of a Venezuelan barn with a beach ball shooting 2 of 10 for a grand total of four points โ€“ his lowest output since a 2-point stinker in a big November loss to Georgetown.

Gerald Henderson scored 17 and Jon โ€œCrazy Faceโ€ Scheyer scored 12 points for Duke (18-1, 5-0 ACC) which dominated from the opening tip and led 40-15 at halftime. From there, the lead grew to a 60-20 less than 4 minutes into the second half.

Duke led by as many as 44 points, handing the Terrapins (13-6, 2-3) their worst loss under coach Gary Williams. It was the fourth-largest margin of defeat in school history. It was Maryland's worst ACC defeat since a 39-point loss to Wake Forest in 1963, and subsequently their worst ACC loss ever.

Some dumb-ass journalist (not T.A.H.) actually asked Williams if he could pinpoint when his team lost control of the game. To his credit, Williams didnโ€™t answer โ€œthe opening tip,โ€ but he was understandably flip with his reply.

"Thirteen-o-eight in the first half," he said, pulling a random time out of his head. "No, I don't know exactly when we lost control, but it was a matter of losing confidence in our ability to run our offense and things like that. I'm not sure when that happened."

How about when the Terps got off the bus?

Duke shot just 43 percent, but hit 12 of 25 3-point attempts and finished with a 56-38 edge in rebounds. Maryland shot 28 percent, including 2-for-12 from 3-point range.

Landon Milbourne scored 19 points to lead Maryland, but the rest of the team shot 9-for-48 (19 percent) for the game.
