Bernie Fine Scandal: Jim Boeheim Should Be Next To Go at Syracuse

Much like the scandal that rocked Penn State, things just keep getting worse for Bernie Fine and Syracuse with each passing day. The university took action by firing the long-time assistant head coach due to his alleged sexual abuse of children. But the administrators shouldn’t stop there. No, they need to take down the biggest fish associated with the program: Jim Boeheim.
While that may sound outlandish or even blasphemous to a majority of Syracuse fans, there are strong grounds to dismiss Boeheim.
As CNBC’s Darren Rovell pointed out on Twitter on Sunday, Boeheim did himself and the university a huge disservice by running his mouth off two weeks ago when the allegations were first made public.
Perhaps Boeheim really does not know anything and was just trying to defend a man that has been on his coaching staff for 36 years when he said that the alleged victims were just looking for money. There is honor in loyalty, but that honor does not always make you look good in the public eye.
But considering everything that we have seen go down at Penn State over the last month, the seriousness of these allegations and only having minute details of the case, Boeheim very well may have dug his own grave.
Will Jim Boeheim Be Fired?
I am not rooting for Boeheim to get fired; I am saying that with all of the stuff that has happened with Fine over the last two weeks, he should have known better than to call these allegations a bald-faced lie.
You can’t come out and make a statement like that when these allegations are being thrown around, especially when you are a high-profile coach at one of the most high-profile basketball programs in the country.
Someone should have advised Boeheim that talking about the situation is a bad idea. Now, he should find himself out of work for his ignorance.
Boeheim did issue a “statement” on the Syracuse Facebook page, but it felt like one of those "too little, too late" things that was filled with a lot of legal jargon and did not come off nearly as passionate as his statement calling these allegations lies.
Boeheim has done a lot for Syracuse during his time as head coach, but if Penn State can fire Joe Paterno then anything is possible. And Boeheim’s ignorance throughout this situation should not go unpunished.
