Duke Basketball: Top 5 Recruits in the Blue Devils' 2012 Recruiting Class
The Duke Blue Devils have had a knack for landing top recruits, and these are the top five on their wish list for the 2012-13 season. Mike Krzyzewski still has time to work his magic, but they have only landed one of the five.
This might be jumping the gun a bit, but Duke has the potential for a very good 2012 recruiting class. If they sign all five of these players, they will be ready to contend for a national title.
5. Tony Parker
1 of 5Tony Parker is a power forward attending Miller Grove High School in Libertonia, GA. He has narrowed his list of schools down to three: Ohio State, Memphis, and of course, the Duke Blue Devils.
Parker is ranked No. 25 in the ESPNU Top 100 for recruits in the 2012 class. He is one of the top big men in the class, and he continues to prove it.
Parker has great hands. He can handle any pass that is thrown his way, or he can use them to block shots.
Parker is talented on the offensive end with his many back-to-the-basket moves. He has an array of moves, the best of which is his left shoulder hook. Parker can also face the basket and drive or nail a 15-foot jumper.
Parker still needs to work on his conditioning and speed, but he has the tools to become an elite big man.
4. Rasheed Sulaimon
2 of 5Rasheed Sulaimon is a shooting guard from Houston, TX, who is attending Strake Jesuit College Prep. Sulaimon has committed to Duke, and is ranked No. 20 in the ESPNU Top 100.
Sulaimon can score at will, can drive or hit jumpers, has nice range and he can knock down three or four three's in a row.
The shooting guard can penetrate well. He can score easily in transition by driving to the rim, and his quick first step allows him to get to the basket easily in a half-court set as well.
Sulaimon is a threat on the wing as he can shoot well, but he also knows how to drive and kick to a teammate.
Sulaimon is a decent defender, but he tends to give up on plays, something that Mike Krzyzewski will have him working on at Duke. He also loses focus and can pick up cheap fouls or make ridiculous gambles that hardly ever pay off.
With some hard work and guidance from Coach K, Sulaimon could become a great player.
3. Rodney Purvis
3 of 5Rodney Purvis is a shooting guard from Raleigh, NC, attending Upper Room Christian Academy. He has not committed anywhere, but has narrowed his list of schools down to Missouri, NC State and Duke.
Purvis is an extremely gifted player. He has great ball-handling skills, vision, quickness and versatility. He can play either point or shooting guard for the Blue Devils.
Purvis' ball-handling and vision can help him play the point. His excellent passing skills allow him to fit balls into tight spaces and he can also penetrate the lane and dish to open teammates.
His penetration can also lead to him finishing in the lane. If he can't find an area to penetrate through, he can also hit open shots. He still needs to work on his range, but he shoots at a high percentage.
PurvisĀ has the potential to be a star, and he should definitely live up to his No. 1 ranking among shooting guards.
2. Shabazz Muhammad
4 of 5Shabazz Muhammad is the No. 1 small forward in the 2012 class, and he is the No. 3 overall player. He lives in Las Vegas, NV, and attends Bishop Gorman High School. Muhammad still has five schools on his list, but Duke is among them.
Muhammad is a very talented southpaw. He has a good shot, hitting jumpers and three's when needed, but lacks consistency.
Muhammad's driving ability is what makes him special. He is unstoppable from 15 feet away because he drives through the lane so ferociously. He can drive and finish over much taller defenders.
Muhammad is already an elite player, and he has very few faults. The biggest downside of Muhammad is that he is almost definitely going to be a one-and-done player.
1. Andre Drummond
5 of 5Andre Drummond is a center from St. Thomas More School High School in Middletown, CT. He is the No. 1 recruit in the 2012 class, and he is going to have to pick between the top programs in the nation.
Drummond has five schools still on his list, including Duke. The Blue Devils have a chance at getting this phenomenal player, but it's going to be tough.
Drummond is 6'10" 275-pound beast who can do a variety of things on the offensive end of the floor. He can catch anything in the lane and dunk it with authority. He can face the basket and either hit shots or drive. He can play with his back to the basket, finishing with a sweet hook. He's got great reflexes and is a good passer too.
On the defensive side he can use his ability to get up high well. He is a ferocious shot-blocker and an animal when it comes to rebounding. He has good quickness, allowing him to play farther out than most centers, but he can also take on any big man inside.
Drummond is going to be a huge success and the Blue Devils can only hope to be his final choice.
