Georgetown-WVU: Hoyas Wins a Wild One

Sean StancillJan 26, 2008

The age-old adage ''Like Father, Like Son'' finds no better manifestation than in Patrick Ewing, Jr.

Ewing, Jr. looked just like his father as he blocked a last second layup to wrap up the win.Ā

In the best Big East game so far this season, the Hoyas hung on—thanks to timely execution by their role players.

Jesse Sapp nailed the game winning three-pointer with 6.2 seconds left and Patrick Ewing, Jr. made the Block of the Year on Darris Nichols's layup as the time expired.

Jesse Sapp led all Hoya scorers with 15 points and Roy Hibbert led the Hoyas in rebounding with 10.Ā  Nichols led all Moutaineers with 16 points. Ā

With 30 seconds remaining, backup PG Jeremiah Rivers fouled Nichols.Ā  Nichols knocked down the first free throw, but missed the second, bringing the score to 57-55, with West Virginia leading. Ā

The Hoyas, with one timeout left, decided to go down the length of the court to tie or win the game.Ā  Sapp came off a screen and swished the game winning three-point field goal with 6.2 remaining. Ā

On the game's final possession, Nichols drove past Sapp and looked to have the game winning basket, but great weak side help from Ewing, Jr. ended all hopes of victory for West Virginia.Ā  Ewing, Jr. fully extended and just blocked the shot before it reached the backboard.Ā  The referees did not call goaltending and the Hoya bench raced onto the court in celebration—while West Virginia coach Bob Huggins chased referees into the locker room, possibly earning a suspension.

The Moutaineers led throughout most of the game courtesy of their three-point shooting.Ā  Coming into tonight, Georgetown was tops in the country in opponent three-point field goal percentage, while the Mountaineers were averaging 8.3 three-point field goals per game—good for first in the Big East.

But something had to give, and it was the Hoya defense that gave way to an onslaught from behind the arc.Ā  Despite the game's exciting finish, both teams suffered long droughts starting with Georgetown going without a field goal for over six and a half minutes in the first half. Ā

West Virginia's drought last for over five minutes in the first half, and their three-point shooting cooled off in the second half and Georgetown dominated the points in the paint battle 36 to 10.

Georgetown has always been successful with a star center.Ā  Hibbert is following in the footsteps of Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning, with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks.Ā  He has all the tools to be successful in the NBA, but his conditioning needs further development.
