BYU Guard Jimmer Fredette: Meet the Future

Aaron MMar 18, 2011

In such a relative world, athletes are often analyzed, measured and described in comparison to other players with similar attributes. Everyone is consistently begging the question. Who is going to be the next Kobe Bryant? Who is going to be the next LeBron James?

Jimmer Fredette is neither. He is going to be the next Jimmer Fredette. The 6'2" guard from Glens Falls, New York is creating his own path, which is being recognized all throughout the basketball community.

Fredette is undoubtedly one of the most prolific scorers to grace the NCAA. Simply put, he knows how to get the ball inside the hoop. His range seems unlimited, his shot seems unstoppable and his ability to put the ball in the basket is impeccable. He cannot be stopped and his ability to score is transcendent.

Averaging 28.6 points per game, Fredette appears to be in a world of his own. He is paving his own way by simply scoring. His game is not flashy as he does not have the pizazz of a Blake Griffin. He does not have the body of a Dwight Howard nor does he have the speed of a Rajon Rondo.

Jimmer Fredette scores and there is nothing anyone can ever do to to stop him. Without playing a game at the professional level, he is already starting to receive recognition from NBA players as Kevin Durant calls him "the greatest scorer in the world." Washington Wizards guard John Wall refers to Fredette as "cold."

He has great awareness, a great worth ethic and is a natural leader. When his collegiate career ends within the next couple of days or weeks, depending on his team's performance during the rest of the tournament, he will undoubtedly hold the title of being the greatest collegiate player to ever put on the BYU Cougars uniform.

He will leave behind 10 BYU season/career records and five Mountain West records. He will leave behind fresh memories of his 52-point night on March 11 against New Mexico. The 22-year-old kid who has been scoring three-point shots since the age of 5 is going to be missed by not only the fans of BYU but collegiate basketball fans all over the world.

For the past four years we have witnessed a unique gift in Jimmer and only time will tell if this continues in the NBA, where Jimmer Fredette is inevitably headed.

On June 23, when David Stern undoubtedly calls Fredette's name, do not forget it. You're not looking at the next LeBron James. You're not looking at the next Jerry West. You are looking at the next Jimmer Fredette.
