College Basketball: Don't Look Now, Here Come The Johnnies

Rob MurrayJan 4, 2011

Big things were expected from Steve Lavin when he took over at St. John's, but those big things were expected to come in the future. Instead, he's wasting no time getting things done.

Last night, St. John’s beat No.13 Georgetown in Madison Square Gardens. With seven seconds left, the Hoyas were hanging onto a one-point lead before the Storm’s Dwight Hardy drove to the basket for the win. Three Hoyas went up for the block. Too bad none went for the rebound. Justin Brownlee put back the miss, giving the Storm the lead for good.

From ESPN.COM: “This is what I came to St. John’s for,” said Justin Browlee, whose rebound basket with 10 seconds to play gave the Red Storm the lead for good. “When you get a rebound like that, a big play, it makes you feel like you were right. Any win over a ranked team is great but we know we still have work to do.”

St. John’s is 10-3 on the season, 3-0 in the Big East. Their two other Big East wins were both on the road against West Virginia and Providence.

The Johnnies are playing smart, efficient ball. Of course it helps to have seven seniors in your eight-man rotation (freshman Dwayne Polee Jr. is the only non-senior).

According to Ken Pom, St. John’s is 30th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 33rd in two-point percentage. Most importantly, they are ninth in the nation in turnover percentage. Those are all signs of a veteran team. If they have one flaw, it's that they can’t seem to hit the deep ball. Their 31.5 shooting percentage from three is the 253rd in the nation.
