Take Your Shot: How 2008 Buzzer-Beater Changed the Future for Mario Chalmers
There were approximately two minutes left in the 2008 NCAA basketball national championship game. Kansas head coach Bill Self was conducting the team's final huddle of regulation.
"OK, if someone's going to have to take a big shot at the end, who's it going to be?" No one said a word, but all the players on the bench turned their heads and looked at Mario Chalmers. He was the guy that wanted the ball more than anyone on the team in those moments...and he delivered.
Kansas wound up winning the title in overtime, its first championship since 1988. That moment took the monkey off the back of Self, who had been criticized for never bringing a title to Lawrence. Chalmers went on to become a significant role player for the Miami Heat, hitting more big shots and winning back-to-back NBA titles in 2012 and 2013.
In exclusive interviews with Chalmers and Self, they take us back to how that moment came about and what it represents to them and to Lawrence.
