Arizona vs. Michigan State: Score and Reaction from 2016 Armed Forces Classic
In one of the most attractive-looking matchups of college basketball's opening weekend, No. 10 Arizona defeated No. 12 Michigan State 65-63 on Friday night from the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Kadeem Allen provided the game-winner with 1.9 seconds left after driving the lane and laying it in off the glass. Just moments later, he swatted away Michigan State's rush up the floor to preserve the win:
CBS Sports' Seth Davis though couldn't believe that Allen was able to run the floor so easily:
Arizona held a three-point lead in the game's final half-minute, but Lourawls "Tum Tum" Nairn bounced in a three-pointer with seven seconds to go to tie things up and set up Allen's heroics.
Allen had 10 points to complement Kobi Simmons' team-high 18 points as Arizona overcame an early 15-point deficit to pull out the win.
While these two teams are some of the largest powerhouses in college basketball, both of them introduced a pair of new-look rosters on Friday.
Arizona rolled out four new starters in its opening game, with two of them being freshmen in Rawle Alkins and Lauri Markkanen, who has been viewed as a possible NBA lottery prospect.
Markkanen finished with 13 points, while Alkins had just three.
Michigan State, who also had four new starters, boasted an impressive recruiting class headlined by Miles Bridges, Scout's No. 14 national prospect of the class of 2016.
He dazzled in his debut, putting up a game-high 21 points as Michigan State's only double-digit scorer.
Bridges and the Spartans started on a 9-0 run in which the freshman scored seven of those points, including this reverse jam, via SportsCenter:

It got former NFL wide receiver and Michigan State alumnus Plaxico Burress excited:
While Arizona started the game hitting just one of its first six shots with four offensive fouls and five turnovers, Michigan State put the pedal to the metal, opening up a 17-2 lead on the far less physical Wildcats.
CBSSports.com's Matt Norlander saw a huge difference between the teams:
Down 21-8 with 12:45 to go in the first, Arizona woke up and exploded for a 17-0 run to take a 25-21 lead while holding Michigan State scoreless for eight minutes, three seconds.
The sloppy play from Arizona might have been contagious, as the Spartans committed 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Simmons led the charge for the Wildcats as he racked up 15 first-half points to help his team take a 34-30 lead into halftime.
Michigan State would use a hot start to the second in which it shot 6-of-9 from the field to chip away at Arizona's small lead and tied the game at 44 with with 13:34 left.
Bridges continued to build his highlight reel in the process, thundering home an alley-oop in which he seemingly levitated to the left of the hoop before throwing it down with authority.
It was nothing new for NBCSports.com's Scott Phillips:
A 7-0 run helped Michigan State build a five-point lead midway through the half, although Arizona ensured this time that it wouldn't pull too far ahead.
Neither team had an advantage of three points or higher in the final seven minutes.
A gritty win like this should provide a huge building block for Arizona, as it won't play a ranked team until it meets Gonzaga on Dec. 3.
But taking down a high-profile school like a Michigan State, although it is undergoing some large changes, is a signature win that the Wildcats can immediately add to the 2016-17 resume.
Post-Game Reaction
Arizona head coach Sean Miller sang the praises of Allen after the game, via Arizona Basketball:
Even he took to Twitter shortly after the game:
"Great win tonight for our team in a very hard fought game. Thanks to our fans who travelled to Honolulu! #BearDown

On the opposite side, an unhappy Michigan State coach Tom Izzo broke down some of the things that plagued his team on Friday night, via Brendan F. Quinn of MLive Media:
It doesn't get much easier for the Spartans as they will travel to New York for a Tuesday game against Kentucky.
They'll also travel to the Bahamas over Thanksgiving and play No. 1 Duke on Nov. 29. If Michigan State's inexperienced team can't grow up quick, its season might be over early.
