Steve McElvene, Dayton Basketball Player, Dies at 20
Dayton Flyers center Steve McElvene died Thursday morning, per David Jablonski of the Dayton Daily News.
Glenn Marini of WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana, reported the 20-year-old collapsed at his home.
Dayton head coach Archie Miller released a statement, per Jablonski:
"We are devastated at this news. Any death is a tragedy, but for someone so young who worked so hard to have his dreams within reach, it's hard to put into words how painful this is. Our hearts and prayers go out to Steve's family. My family, our team and our staff will have to pull together, not only in support of Steve's family, but in support of each other at this terrible time.
"
Wright State guard Justin Mitchell reacted to the news on social media:
Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade released a statement on McElvene's death, per Matthew Schwade of Rivals.com:
McElvene made a big impact in his one year on the court. He appeared in 32 games for the Flyers in 2015-16 and averaged 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per night. His 55 blocks set a Dayton record for most in a season, narrowly edging out Chris Wright, who blocked 53 shots as a junior in 2009-10.
Jablonski thought the New Haven, Indiana, native was on his way to a special career with the Flyers:
