Internet Reacts to UAB and Georgia State Upsets in NCAA Tournament Round of 64

Dan CarsonMar 19, 2015

Right on cue, March Madness has just begun, and most of us are already feeding our brackets into the hot flames of the nearest wood kiln.

College basketball fans could scarcely finish lunch before the first of the 2015 NCAA tournament's two major upsets occurred, starting with No. 3 Iowa State crumpling late under the relentless attack of No. 14 UAB.

The Cyclones entered the final minute of their round-of-64 matchup with the Blazers up 55-53. It appeared Iowa State would pull out a win by the fur of its teeth until UAB's Robert Brown hit a big, spot-up triple at the 52-second mark to swing momentum in the Blazers' favor.

UAB held on for the win, prompting the first wave of hysteria to reverberate through the Twittersphere.

Everyone everywhere appears to have "almost" picked UAB, and many aren't too high on the potential NBA future of lauded Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg:

One former UAB football player was worried the basketball team might suffer a similar fate if it keeps winning games. After watching the university shut down his bowl-bound team after the 2014 season, he knows no program is safe:

Voodoofive.com's Collin Sherwin noted UAB has had more success winning postseason games in revenue sports this year than Alabama:

The second upset of the day occurred when No. 14 Georgia State roared back and toppled No. 3  Baylor in the final minute of play.

There were priceless visuals abound in this stretch, with injured head coach Ron Hunter falling off his rollie stool as his son R.J. Hunter sank a deep three-pointer with two seconds remaining to steal the victory (Vine via @Vinnyviner):

Ron fell out of his chair, the Internet exploded, and now we're all very concerned the coach's busted Achilles might not be the only casualty should the Panthers keep winning in March:

So, class—what did we learn today?

We learned No. 3 seeds are the new No. 5 seeds and to always invest in alert services for aging loved ones who err on the clumsy side. It'll pay for itself.

Dan is on Twitter. It's not even dinner and his heart can't sustain this madness.
