After a few weeks of stability at the top of the rankings, we have reached that point in the college basketball season where teams are playing musical chairs with the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25.
Last week we saw Duke fall from the top spot after a loss against North Carolina State. The Blue Devils came back this week with a nice win against Georgia Tech, but Ryan Kelly's status remains the talking point for this team.
This week, just five days after vaulting to the top spot in the AP rankings, Louisville dropped a heartbreaking game at home against Big East rival Syracuse. The Cardinals' misfortune turned into—who else—Duke's gain. The Blue Devils reclaimed the No. 1 spot this week.
Which Team Deserves To Be Ranked No. 1?
But last week wasn't all about the No. 1 team going down. There were plenty of upsets and incredible finishes to be found.
Indiana lost its shot to vault back into the No. 1 spot this week after losing to Wisconsin last Tuesday. The high-powered Hoosiers were held to just 59 points by that tenacious Badgers defense, easily their worst-scoring game so far this season. Jared Berggren slapped an exclamation point on Wisconsin's victory by putting Indiana's defenders on a poster.
The best game of the weekend saw Butler literally steal a victory away from Gonzaga. Brad Stevens' squad vaults into the Top 10 thanks to that victory, as well as losses by Minnesota (vs. Michigan) and Creighton (at Wichita State).
Even though we are still more than a month away from March, the madness is starting in college basketball. Conference play always shows the true mettle of a team, and we are seeing what they are made of right now.
