SEC's Inconsistent Play Reason for Downfall

Justin FiehrerJan 21, 2009

Like politicians and their flip-flops, and Jekyll and Hyde itself, basketball in SEC is always changing. Only this change isn't very good change. The SEC this season has been by far the most confusing conference in all of college basketball.

Now, there is no question that the SEC does have some good teams, and there is some very good talent worthy of All-Americans, but when it comes to teams as a whole, no one can find consistency. After the Gators' loss Wednesday night, the longest winning streak is four games. How's that for inconsistency?

Every mid-week and every weekend game has people wondering and thinking, who is the next up and coming team? Who's going to take over the reins next? Nobody knows, and the reason for that is simple.

Re-Grading Offseason's Biggest Moves 🔠

Every time a team puts up a halfway decent win and thinks they are proving skeptics wrong, they go and blow it with a loss. Not just a loss, but a bad loss. Week by week, game by game, teams continue to shuffle.

Take the past couple weeks for example. Just two weeks ago Tennessee seemed to be the favorite in the league, followed by Arkansas and Florida, then Kentucky and a few others. Suddenly, however, Tennessee got spanked by the Kentucky Wildcats, and Arkansas has questionably lost three straight games.

So people began to think Kentucky and Florida were now the top two. Could these two lead the way? Mississippi St. began to make some noise in the West with a 3-0 start to conference play, but then fell shamefully by 24 points to a now hot out of nowhere LSU team. Then Florida lost to South Carolina on the road, who seemed to be struggling but now has everyone scratching their heads as to how they won.

So it seems the Wildcats are the top of the SEC. Did you forget about the Tennessee Volunteers? Yeah, so did I. Well, they just won on the road with ease at Vanderbilt, which is always a hard place to play no matter how bad they are. So suddenly falling from the top to the middle of the pack and back up again, the team from Knoxville is going back to good—it's just a matter of time before they fall again.

So for now the Wildcats remain as the only team that refuses to lose, although they played average at best in a win over Auburn. But the puzzling question is, who's next? Next to be second, or next to flip-flop on how they are playing.

So who's second best, you ask? Well, that LSU team who's now hot with three in a row, they've got Xavier next.
