NBA Free Agency: David West Would Be a Bad Fit for the Orlando Magic

Drew LaingJul 22, 2011

The 2011 NBA free agent market could be classified as one of the weakest group of free agents in a while.

It does not have the star power like the 2010 summer did with players like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire.

Instead, the top player in this summer's free agent market is David West.

In 2010 he averaged 18.9 points and almost eight rebounds per game. He puts up productive numbers for a power forward and is a reliable option on offense every trip down the floor.

And his name has been mentioned as a player to bring into Orlando to help convince Dwight Howard to stay with the Magic.

However, I believe the Magic would be wasting their time and need to stay away from West.

I know West's stats over the last few years would suggest that he would be a certain upgrade for the Magic at the four-spot. But in my opinion, his numbers are a little misleading.

While with the New Orleans Hornets, West had the excellent opportunity of playing with Chris Paul, who is arguably the best point guard in the NBA. A lot of West's production could be attributed to the fact that Paul is garnering most of the defense's attention on offense, which greatly opens up the lane for West.

Not to mention, West has had his troubles with injuries. Most recently, West tore his ACL last season, missing the last portion of the season.

There is no telling how West will perform after suffering such a serious injury like an ACL tear.

We just haven't been able to see how West will perform without an All-Star point guard, which is something that he will have to experience if he signs with the Magic.

Plus, West will be looking for a multi-year deal with a sizable amount of money attached.

West is simply not worth the risk for the Magic to seriously take a look at him once the free agency period commences.
