R LAug 14, 2008

This series is highlighting the top 10 moments of this past NHL season. Goals, pretty plays, hits, fights, and screw-ups, you'll see them all.

January 1, 2008: A classic finish.

The Winter Classic game between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins was highly anticipated by fans. Only the NHL's second out door game-and first in the United States, it delivered in every way.

A record 71, 217 fans packed the Ralph Wilson Stadium in New York. The conditions were rough, and good opportunities were hard to come by. Only two goals were scored in regulation. Colby Armstrong tallied for the Penguins, while Brian Campbell equalized for the Sabres.

In the shootout, Alex Kotalik scored on Buffalo's first attempt. The teams would then exchange misses before Kris Letang evened the score by beating Ryan Miller. Maxim Afinogenov failed on Buffalo's last attempt.

Who do you think shoots last for Pittsburgh? That's right, Sidney Crosby. With the game on his stick, Crosby came towards Miller, avoided a pokecheck, and beat him five-hole.

It was the story book ending for the NHL, Crosby won the Winter Classic for the Penguins. Unsurprisingly, "Sid the kid" was extremely pleased with how the game turned out.

"Growing up, I played a lot outside," said Crosby, a Nova Scotia native. "When you see 70,000 people jammed into a stadium to watch hockey, it's a good sign. The atmosphere and environment, I don't think you can beat that."

I'm not a real fan of Crosby's, but this is a moment that will be remembered for years to come.

10) October 15, 2007: McCabe scores—on himself.
