Ex-Raiders QB Matt McGloin Signs 1-Year Contract with Eagles

Scott PolacekApr 10, 2017

The Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of quarterback Matt McGloin to a one-year deal on Monday.

McGloin made waves during the 2016 season when he received a chance to start Week 17 for the Oakland Raiders after Derek Carr broke his fibula in Week 16. However, McGloin suffered a shoulder injury in the 24-6 loss to the Denver Broncos, and Connor Cook started Oakland's Wild Card Game loss to the Houston Texans.

McGloin completed six of his 11 pass attempts for 21 yards against Denver before getting hurt.

According to Sports-Reference, McGloin has appeared in 14 games with seven starts in his four NFL seasons. Six of the seven starts came in 2013, and he sports a 1-6 record in those games.

In all, the Penn State product has 11 touchdown throws and 11 interceptions in his career, although he did tally 1,547 passing yards in 2013.

Pro Football Focus gave McGloin a grade of just 49.5 in its free-agency tracker. The mark was behind players such as David Fales, Ryan Mallett, Landry Jones, Case Keenum, Shaun Hill and Kellen Clemens.

Despite the lack of production in McGloin's career, he said he was looking at "somewhere where they will give me a chance to compete for a starting role" in free agency, per Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.

That immediately eliminated Oakland since Carr is the face of the franchise and Cook was given the nod in the postseason, but it is difficult to see McGloin as anything other than a backup for depth purposes at the most important position on the field.

He is just 27 years old and has experience under center but will be battling with Nick Foles for the backup role behind Carson Wentz.
