5 Realistic Trade Partners for Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 NFL Draft
The 2015 NFL draft is set to begin on April 30, and no one really knows for sure what will happen with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Rumors have been flying that the team will try to trade for head coach Chip Kelly's former college quarterback at Oregon, Marcus Mariota, although Kelly is on record as saying he wonโt mortgage the future for one player.
That shouldnโt dispel the fact that Kelly still badly wants Mariota. Draft day will reveal how much Kelly is willing to give up to acquire Mariota.
Will he try to package his current quarterback, Sam Bradford, along with a star defensive player on a rookie deal (Fletcher Cox or Mychal Kendricks) and some draft picks to move up? Or is he really content to just stay put with the 20th overallย selection?
Last year, Kelly traded down from the 22ndย pick to the 26thย to select Louisville outside linebacker Marcus Smith. Heโs likely to move up or down as he feels fit to target the player he wants.
Here are the five most realistic trade partners for Kelly on draft day.
Cleveland Browns
1 of 5
The Cleveland Browns are the most logical trade partner for Chip Kelly, although it has nothing to do with quarterback Johnny Manziel.
Thanks to the Buffalo Bills, the Browns hold two first-round picks and are slated to draft at 12th and 19th in the first round.
According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, Browns general manager Ray Farmer has already offered the team's 19th overall pickย for new Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford.ย Itโs surprising that Kelly turned down a deal like that, as getting two first-round picks would have given him great ammunition to move up for Mariota.
Perhaps heโs waiting for draft day and wants to do the trade then, but only if Mariota falls low enough that Kelly can get the Brownsโ pick and then package it for Mariota in a deal.
Tennessee Titans
2 of 5
The Tennessee Titans hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, which meansโassuming Jameis Winston goes first overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneersโthe Titans can select Mariota if they want him.
The Titans could also deal their pick to a willing trade partner. As reported by Michael Cronin of Sun Times Network, there have been rumors suggestingย the San Diego Chargersย could swap quarterback Philip Rivers for that pick.
For their part, the Eagles may want to work out a trade for the No. 2 overall selection that sends their 2015 first-round pick, Bradford, next yearโs first-rounder and a defensive starter like Mychal Kendricks or Fletcher Coxโneither of whom has received a long-term contract extension yetโthe other way.
Moving all the way up from No. 20 to No. 2 would be a big jump. Maybe he'd prefer to work out a three-team trade, but if he wants to be assured of Mariota, this is the spot to climb to.
Washington Redskins
3 of 5
The Washington Redskins famously traded three first-round picks for Robert Griffin III back in 2012, a move that looked like a great trade for the Redskins after one year.
Since then, though, RGIII has suffered through injuries and benchings, and you can bet Washington may want to get some draft picks back.
The Redskins could take a potential standout defensive player like Clemson's Vic Beasley or Nebraska's Randy Gregory at pick No. 5. They could also trade down with the Eagles, acquire a handful of draft picks and rebuild their team through the draft while trying one more year of RGIII.
New York Jets
4 of 5
The New York Jets hold the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. Theyโre a prime candidate to draft Mariota if heโs available, especially considering theyโre stuck with Geno Smith if they donโt get him.
But new general manager Mike Maccagnan may want to start his tenure with more than just one first-round pick. He may be able to get a veteran quarterback like Sam Bradford and two first-round picks from Philadelphia. Depending on how badly Kelly wants Mariota, he may even give up a defensive player.
New England Patriots
5 of 5
Bill Belichick is always willing to trade up or down if he sees a player he likes. His New England Patriots hold the 32ndย overall pick in the NFL draft, so if Philadelphia trades with the Patriots, it wonโt be to acquire Mariota.
After all, these two teams really love trading with each other.ย If 2015 is anything like 2014, Kelly will have a very specific draft board.
If a handful of players he may be targetingโJake Fisher (offensive tackle), Byron Jones (cornerback) or Arik Armstead (defensive tackle) to name a fewโare off the board, Kelly may see it fit to trade down 12 spots and grab a still-talented player like Breshad Perriman (wide receiver) or Eric Rowe (cornerback).
After all, itโs a strange draft. There are probably only 15 real first-round talents. Picking at No. 20 isnโt that much different from picking at No. 32.
Maybe Kelly would take a second-round pick to move down to the end of Round 1.
