Marc Gasol Does Not Appreciate Being Denied His Low-Fives

Dan CarsonJan 9, 2015

Low-fives are the consolation prize of human contact—the most ineffectual form of congratulations, a bronze medal of recognition better used as a drink coaster when compared to the shining trophies that are the high-five and flying chest bump.

Nonetheless, Marc Gasol invests in the low-five. He values it as equal to other forms of salutation, which would explain the weird scene that unfolded near a tunnel at Philips Arena during Wednesday night's game between the Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks.

Hawks fan and local H.O.P.E. advocate Aamir Rupani captured a Vine of the incident. As you'll note, Gasol goes to slap a fan's low-five and takes exception when his charitable offer is rejected.

Rupani told Bleacher Report that after the encounter, he Snapchatted his footage to the fan involved in the altercation. This fan then uploaded it to Instagram under the username Mikeyc455.

Mikeyc455 writes in his (now privatized) Instagram post that he was the fan in question, and that Gasol wasn't happy about being denied a low-five:

"

So I held my hand out to Marc Gasol for a high five, and when he went for it I pulled my hand away! Needless to say Marc didn't think it was as funny as I did. He kept trying to get me to high five him, but every time I just denied him! #GoHawks #HawksNation

"

Despite the tepid nature of the low-five, it's easy to understand why Gasol stuck around to complete the deal. In his mind, a skin transaction had been initiated, and the Grizzlies center would not leave without the successful rendering of daps promised.

Furthermore, if there's one thing we know about Wednesday night at Philips Arena, it's that the blood was running high for everyone in attendance. With "Swipe Right Night" in full effect and the Hawks clawing their way to a hard-fought 96-86 win, getting snubbed by some kid in a trucker hat wasn't about to happen.

Just let it go, Marc. Low-fives are for missed free throws and unceremonious benchings. It's not worth it.
