Peyton Manning to New York Jets: Star QB Must Avoid Unstable Jets at All Costs

Adam WellsJun 3, 2018

The New York Jets might be hot for Peyton Manning, but there is no reason whatsoever that the feeling should be mutual.

According to Bob Glauber of New York Newsday, Rex Ryan is going to make a hard push for Manning's services.

"

It's uncertain whether the Jets will be able to sign him, but two people familiar with the situation said the Jets are prepared to make a serious run. Coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum said last month they are happy with Mark Sanchez as their starter, but both said they would not rule out upgrading at any position.

Ignoring the salary cap situation, which ESPN reports would likely force the Jets to get rid of Mark Sanchez to afford Manning, the Jets' locker room is not the kind of environment that a player like Manning would want to be part of.

Players were quick to throw Sanchez under the bus when things weren't going the way they wanted. Santonio Holmes basically stood on the field in Week 17 last season, with little interest in trying to do anything that would help the team.

More important than that, everyone on this team likes to talk to the media, and they have to do it anonymously. When teammates are being thrown under the bus in reports, it is a red flag that things may not be so great behind the scenes.

Manning is doing all he can just to get back on the field after having four neck surgeries and leaving the only NFL franchise that he has ever known. There is going to be enough of a media circus around that. Imagine what would be said about him anonymously if he had one bad game, or his neck problems flared up.

Nothing that the Jets can say or do should be enough to draw Manning in. He has enough to worry about on his own. When you add the spectacle of New York, Rex Ryan, all the talkers in the locker room and the volatile nature of this franchise, it is too risky for Manning.

There will be plenty of other suitors for him, and not one of them would present even a fraction of the problems that the Jets would.
