Knicks Rumors: Tyson Chandler is a Perfect Fit and Signing for New York

Matt ShetlerDec 8, 2011

As free agency is set to begin tomorrow, everyone knows the New York Knicks' need for a true center to fit into their already-talented lineup.

While all focus of late has seemed to focus on next year's crop of free agents and the desire for Chris Paul to somehow play in New York, they still need an upgrade at the center position for the upcoming season.

They may have found that guy, and it's someone who could help this season.

According to NBA Insider Ken Berger from CBSSports.com, multiple league executives put the Knicks as the new favorite to land Tyson Chandler.

Considering how the Knicks' offense can score and also considering how other teams can score at will on this team, adding Chandler to the lineup seems all too perfect.

What they need the most is a big man that excels on the defensive end of the floor and crashes the boards. That sums up Chandler's game. That's what made Chandler a huge part of Dallas winning the NBA championship a season ago.

He's long and the biggest thing he does is alter shots. He's more of a shot changer than a typical shot blocker. Chandler has averaged a little over a block a game throughout his career, but the amount of makeable shots he will change in a game is unmeasurable.

He's a great athlete for a big guy and dominates on the defensive boards. Having Chandler in the middle should prevent the multiple second- and third-chance shots that the Knicks are prone to allowing.

He doesn't have much of an offensive game to speak of, although he runs the floor well, which could lead to some easy buckets with the Knicks. He also finishes around the basket pretty well, which is a plus for Knicks big guys.

The way I see it is that there are only three negatives with Chandler.

First of all, he's coming off his best season in the NBA and sometimes those veterans end up being overpaid.

Secondly, he has shown that he's been injury-prone in the past.

Finally, his price tag is likely to be too high.

As a player, Chandler is a perfect fit on this current Knicks team, considering if he comes at the right price. As good of a fit as he may be, he's not the guy that you overpay for. Especially not this season.

Other than that, the impact he could have on this team makes Chandler an almost perfect fit in New York.
