San Diego Chargers' Norv Turner: Will Inevitable Firing End His Coaching Career?

Walt J.Dec 5, 2011

Having lost six straight games prior to tonight's win over the Jaguars, the Chargers currently sit at 5-7—last place in the AFC West.

Furthermore, with Baltimore, Detroit and Oakland on the horizon, the Chargers could conceivably miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season, thereby bringing an end to the Norv Turner regime.

Anyone who has followed the NFL over the years is certainly aware of the number of coaching changes that can take place at the end of every season (11 in 2008, three in 2009, eight in 2010).

Given the propensity for NFL teams to replace coaches like Kim Kardashian swaps out athletes, it's probably safe to assume that there will be a number of changes at the end of the 2011 season.

The question then becomes, if Norv Turner is fired, will he get a shot with another team?

I believe that the question that should be asked is: does Norv Turner deserve another head coaching job?

While Norv Turner has been known for his offensive prowess throughout his career, his stints as an NFL head coach have been average at best.

During his 14 seasons as a head coach—spanning three teams—he has a disappointing three 10-plus win seasons and a winning record at only his most recent stop.

Here's a breakdown of his three head coaching stops:

Washington Redskins: 49-59-1 (1994-2000)

  • One playoff appearance (1-1)
  • Two second place or higher division finishes
  • Three seasons with a winning record
  • Fired after Week 14 in 2000

Oakland Raiders: 9-23 (2004-2005)

  • Last in the AFC West both seasons
  • Fired after the 2004 season

San Diego Chargers: 46-30 (2007-Present)

  • Three division titles (one with an 8-8 record)
  • Three seasons with a winning record
  • One AFC title game appearance

Although Norv has been relatively successful with the Chargers, he has been unable to consistently take this team deep into the playoffs.

Even with perennial Pro Bowlers such as Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson; Norv Turner has been unable to produce a team that can win the big games.

His ability to coordinate an offense speaks for itself, however his inability to put together a winning team concept in all three phases of play (offense, defense, special teams) prevents him from being a successful head coach.

Barring a collapse by the Raiders and Broncos, complete with another "December to Remember" by Norv and Co., I would say that we have seen the last of head coach Norv Turner.
