UFC on FOX: Can Cain Velasquez Beat Brock Lesnar or Alistair Overeem?

Sal DeRoseNov 12, 2011

Junior dos Santos sent Cain Velasquez to the back of the UFC heavyweight title line with a knockout at UFC on Fox 1.

Now a possible fight between Cain and the loser of Brock Lesnar versus Alistair Overeem could be the next fight for the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Cain has already fought Brock and won with a first-round knockout to earn the UFC heavyweight belt. Cain did it in impressive fashion by avoiding the takedowns of Lesnar and using great striking to test the chin of Lesnar.

Could this time around be different for Cain?

I don't think so. Cain beat him once and he did it in very convincing fashion. The same thing would most likely happen again, as Cain possesses the tools to negate Lesnar's wrestling strengths.

As for Overeem, things could be very different. Unlike Lesnar, Overeem is a super talented striker but doesn't have a ground game.

If Cain was able to gameplan better this time and take the fight to the ground, he would most likely beat Overeem.

But saying it and doing it are two different things, as Overeem has a tremendous amount of strength to keep this fight standing.

Cain does have the striking to stand with Overeem and could give him trouble standing, especially since you can question Overeem's chin.

All in all, I think either way Cain has a good fight ahead of him and both are very winnable for the former champ.
