Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos
1 of 10Junior dos Santos defeats Cain Velasquez by knockout (punches) at of the first round.
Velasquez and dos Santos made history at UFC on Fox on Saturday night. Things didn't go well for Velasquez, though, as he lost his heavyweight title via knockout in the first round.
The former champion came out looking to chop the legs of dos Santos with kicks, but the Brazilian challenger countered with a right hand that sent Velasquez crumpling to the canvas.
Amazingly, dos Santos told Joe Rogan after the fight that he was afraid to fight Velasquez because he was not 100 percent for the fight.Ā
A new era in mixed martial arts has begun.
Ā
Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson
2 of 10Ben Henderson defeats Clay Guida by unanimous decision Ā (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).
In an incredible, fast-paced fight, Henderson was able to match Guida's gas tank to earn a unanimous decision victory and lightweight title shot against champion Frankie Edgar.
Henderson was able to stifle Guida's wrestling and land more often in the striking exchanges. It was far from a dominant performance, as Guida showed his usual unmatched cardio and determination. Unfortunately for Guida, that wasn't enough to come away with the victory.
Henderson missed out on a title shot after losing to Anthony Pettis in his final WEC fight. However, Pettis never even ended up receiving his shot at the UFC title, so things actually ended up working out perfectly for Henderson, who appears to have made significant improvements since his loss to Pettis.
Ā
Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza
3 of 10Dustin Poirier defeats Pablo Garza by submission (D'Arce choke) at of the second round.
In a surprisingly dominant performance, Poirier picked up his fourth straight win by submitting Garza in the second round of their fight at UFC on Fox 1.
PoirierĀ out-muscled Garza in the clinch and put his opponent away with a slick D'Arce choke. Garza was simply overmatched against Poirier, who is a future star at only 22 years old.
This was the impressive performance Poirier needed after a lackluster win over Jason Young in his past bout. Ā
Cub Swanson vs. Ricardo Lamas
4 of 10Ricardo Lamas defeats Cub Swanson by submission (arm triangle choke) at of the second round.
Despite a slow start, Lamas caught Swanson with a sneaky arm triangle to remain undefeated in the Octagon. A former WEC featherweight, Lamas has now won five of his past six bouts.
Heading into this fight, Swanson hadn't fought in a year, but he didn't show any signs of ring rust early on. Swanson's loss was simply a result of a fighter not being aware of the situation.
Swanson was one of the more recognizeable fighters in the WEC, but he will need to get back on the winning track to remain in the UFC, an organization that already has plenty of fighters that are much more well-known than Swanson.
Ā
DaMarques Johnson vs. Clay Harvison
5 of 10DaMarques Johnson defeats Clay Harvison by knockout (punches) at 1:34 of the first round.
Johnson bounced back from a loss to Amir Sadollah by knocking out Clay Harvison with a nasty left uppercut. Not interested in going to the ground, Johnson was looking to strike from the start of the fight.
The knockout marked Harvison's second straight loss, after he suffered a defeat to Seth Bacsynski in his prior appearance. Harvison comes to fight and provides excitement, but he may not be ready to compete with UFC-level competition in every fight.
Johnson's UFC career has been a roller-coaster ride since he was a contestant on "The Ultimate Fighter." Perhaps this victory can fuel a winning streak for the 29-year-old.
Ā
Norifumi Yamamoto vs. Darren Uyenoyama
6 of 10Darren Uyenoyama defeats Norifumi Yamamoto by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-27).
Making his UFC debut at the age of 32, Uyenoyama used his grappling expertise to pick up his first back-to-back victories since March 2008.Ā
Having lost four of his past five fights, Norifumi Yamamoto's fall from elite status continued at UFC on Fox 1. At one point, Yamamoto had won 14 straight fights and was considered one of the better pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
With this loss, Yamamoto's time with the UFC may be in danger of ending. The Japanese star got off to a strong start with a slam, but he couldn't hang with Uyenoyama once the fight went to the ground, where Uyenoyama took Yamamoto's back multiple times.
Mackens Semerzier vs. Robert Peralta
7 of 10Robert Peralta defeats Mackens Semerzier by technical knockout (punches) at 1:54 of the third round.
It wasn't a perfect performance, and it may even be protested, but Peralta extended his win streak to nine with a knockout win over Semerzier at UFC on Fox 1. Semerzier looked to be on his way to victory until an accidental headbutt rocked him in the third round.
The headbutt went unnoticed by referee John McCarthy, but replays clearly showed a clash of heads caused the damage that led to the end of the fight. The unfortunate outcome led to Semerzier's fourth loss in his past five fights.
Peralta does have some decent power in his hands and hurt Semerzier earlier in the fight, but this won't be a victory that ends up on his highlight reel. Semerzier had been landing with more frequency and was causing problems for Peralta through the first two frames.
Alex Caceres vs. Cole Escovedo
8 of 10Alex Caceres defeats Cole Escovedo by decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Heading into this UFC on Fox 1 preliminary bout, both Caceres and Escovedo had lost four of their past five fights. Showing a much-improved overall game, Caceres put a stop to his losing streak in impressive fashion.
By defeating a former WEC champion, the 23-year-old Caceres showed that he could have a very bright future in the UFC. Conversely, three straight losses could mark the end of Escovedo's UFC career.
In victory, Caceres was much more patient on his feet, using push kicks and inside leg kicks to keep distance. Even when he was taken to the ground, Caceres threatened with several submissions off of his back.
Ā
Mike Pierce vs. Paul Bradley
9 of 10Mike Pierce defeats Paul Bradley by split decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).
In a rematch of a bout from April 2009, Pierce and Bradley battled it out to another decision. It was slightly closer than theirĀ originalĀ matchup, which took place outside of the UFC, but Pierce walked away with the victory once again.Ā
Pierce has now won 10 of his last 12 fights, with his only defeats coming at the hands of Jon Fitch and Johny Hendricks. Pierce has beaten everyone he has been expected to beat, but he hasn't been able to get over the hump with an upset victory over a highly-ranked welterweight.
After losing to Rafael Natal in his UFC debut, Bradley has now lost two in a row. Bradley will need to get back on track in his next fight if he wants to remain on the UFC roster. The 28-year-old wrestler hasn't looked terrible, but he hasn't been able to put everything together inside the Octagon.
Ā
Aaron Rosa vs. Matt Lucas
10 of 10Aaron Rosa defeats Matt Lucas by majority decision (28-28, 30-26, 30-26).
After losing to Joey Beltran in his UFC debut, Rosa made an excellent decision to drop from heavyweight to light heavyweight. A much trimmer Rosa used some methodicalĀ clinch work to grind away a decision victory over Lucas at UFC on Fox 1.Ā
Unable to use his wrestling to his advantage against Rosa, Lucas had a rough UFC debut. After losing his mouthpiece three times, referee John McCarthy deducted point from Lucas, who ended up losing his mouth piece a fourth time before the end of the bout.
The loss brought Lucas' five-fight winning streak to an end, and the lackluster nature of his loss could mean a quick end to his stint with the world's premier MMA organization.
Rosa, on the other hand, looked much improved at 205 pounds. The 28-year-old might not be physically talented enough to make a run to the top of the division, but he's capable of giving up-and-coming fighters a tough test.
