10 NBA Teams That Should Pursue Free Agent Allen Iverson
Allen Iverson is hopeful of making a comeback in the NBA.
Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports took the time to talk with Iverson about his hoop dreams and "The Answer" expressed no hesitancy in answering, "I'll play for anybody."
The former All-Star said that both his divorce and the health issues with his daughter had his mind in alternate places when it came to his career in the league over the last couple of seasons, but he's insistent all of that is now firmly in the rear-view mirror.
"I don’t have anything to worry about but basketball,” Iverson told Spears, and that's a good thing because there are 10 clubs that could really use his services—assuming he's ready to roll.
10. San Antonio Spurs
1 of 10The roster in San Antonio is comprised of aging veterans and some intriguing youth, and Iverson's addition would be an intriguing one for this group.
While the team has Gary Neal behind Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili at the guard, the club is rather thin behind those three, and Iverson's presence could help to add an element to the second unit that isn't present.
It's going to be tough for him to command a presence in a locker room which is controlled by Tim Duncan, and that could make the Spurs a more fitting landing spot than some might think.
9. New Orleans Hornets
2 of 10The Hornets are going to need to find a way to bring excitement into the building outside of Chris Paul, and Iverson with CP3 in the same backcourt could be downright electric.
New Orleans would be foolish to rely on Marco Belinelli (restricted free agent), and his backup Willie Green is headed for unrestricted free agency, so it's very possible he won't be back in the fold at all.
The team needs to find an added scoring punch after Trevor Ariza proved to be less than overwhelming in terms of his offensive efficiency last season, and Iverson could really inject some life onto the court.
8. Phoenix Suns
3 of 10The Suns are clearly a rebuilding team, and how fun would it be for Phoenix fans to watch the team run with Iverson on the wing?
With the club expected to buy out Vince Carter and Josh Childress looking like an enormous bust, Iverson could provide a really nice boost behind Jared Dudley at the position and serve to anchor the scoring in the second unit.
He might just be worth the gamble in the desert.
7. Orlando Magic
4 of 10While signing Iverson probably wouldn't be cause for Dwight Howard to agree to a long-term extension, he would help to build the depth on the roster in a big way.
Jason Richardson (unrestricted free agent) isn't expected to be back with the Magic, and if the team goes with J.J. Redick in the starting spot, that move leaves an enormous hole for a scorer off the bench.
Iverson could serve as the sixth man that the team sorely needs, and he'd be a low-risk, high-reward player for a franchise that needs to get creative in an effort to be competitive.
6. Atlanta Hawks
5 of 10The Hawks might very well lose sixth man Jamal Crawford to free agency, and that type of scoring off the bench isn't something that can be easily replaced.
With Joe Johnson battling injuries at several points last season during the campaign, considering Iverson might not be a bad move for a club that has struggled to get over the hump despite multiple recent postseason appearances.
He could take over Crawford's role and perhaps even teach a thing or two to young point guard Jeff Teague, who the team is hoping turns out to be the point guard of the future.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers
6 of 10What do the Cavs have to lose by agreeing with Iverson?
Nothing.
This team can't get much worse than it showed last season when Cleveland managed a meager 19 wins, and anyone who watched a single Cavs game knows that this is a club that really needs help on the wing.
In a no-pressure situation, Iverson might just thrive in ways we haven't seen him do in a long time.
4. New Jersey Nets
7 of 10This is a team that was unbelievably desperate for offensive production last season, and Iverson's arrival could make a whole lot of sense for both parties.
Outside of Anthony Morrow and rookie MarShon Brooks, there's not a ton of perimeter help on the Nets' current roster, and Iverson could serve as a backup at both shooting guard and point guard, when Deron Williams needs to be occasionally spelled.
While New Jersey's pursuit of Iverson will be highly dependent on what other plans the team might have, he should definitely be under strong consideration.
If he's a problem, Avery Johnson will show no hesitancy in getting rid of him.
3. Houston Rockets
8 of 10The Rockets are a really intriguing team because of the mix-up of talent on the roster, but this is one club that is still a couple of pieces away from making a legitimate push in the Western Conference.
With the emergence of Kyle Lowry and the strong play from Kevin Martin, Iverson would be the definitive sixth man on this team and allow the Rockets to shop Courtney Lee.
He'd certainly be an unorthodox attempt to create some more scoring for the team, but sometimes that is what it takes to achieve what is attempting to be accomplished.
2. Minnesota Timberwolves
9 of 10Ricky Rubio and Allen Iverson in the same backcourt?
Why not?
This team has no legitimate option to step into the starting lineup at the 2-guard spot right now, as both Martell Webster and Wayne Ellington are better suited for bench roles, and Wes Johnson at that spot was something that shouldn't be seen on a regular basis.
Iverson's presence on the floor would open up some increased possibilities for franchise face Kevin Love, and it would certainly make for an interesting experiment under new head coach Rick Adelman.
1. Toronto Raptors
10 of 10The Raptors can't be fixed in a single season, but the team can certainly make improvements, and adding Iverson should be at the forefront of that list.
With an oft-injured Leandro Barbosa behind DeMar DeRozan and little production on the offensive end outside of he and Andrea Bargnani, the Raptors could use another scoring punch in the form of a quick, explosive athlete.
Iverson is going to have to show that he can add value by serving as both someone who produces on the court and as somewhat of a mentor to DeRozan, and should the team decide to finally trade Jose Calderon (something I've suggested for a long time), Iverson could bridge the gap at point guard should Jerryd Bayless not cut the mustard.
It's no slam dunk, but it's worth going up for the attempt.
