Floyd Mayweather vs. Amir Khan: 5 Reasons People Want to See It
Amir Khan has brought his name to the fore, by laying down a challenge to pound-for-pound great Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
According to Khan, Mayweather has accepted the fight in principle, however, it’s left to be seen whether Mayweather and Khan’s meeting in the ring will in de facto happen.
Also Khan will have to make the jump from light welterweight to welterweight, and that might take some time to adjust to.
If it does transpire that King Mayweather and Prince Khan eventually go head to head, then it will make for great viewing—answering a lot of questions on both sides or maybe not.
So let’s take a gander...
5. Khan Set Things in Motion
1 of 5Khan has stated that he wants to clean up boxing, more crucially he wants to take care of the business that’s Mayweather.
Khan has called the five-division world champion disrespectful, in essence he’s saying that Mayweather is a discredit to the sport and something needs to be done about that—that someone is Khan.
Just as long as Khan gets past his next opponent Lamont Peterson, expect verbal exchanges between the two to reach an all time low sometime in 2012.
Khan has lit the fuse, and I’m sure that the fans would love to see the fire.
4. Khan’s Chin
2 of 5Since Khan’s brutal decimation at the hands of one Breidis Prescott more than three years ago, Khan has gone on to capture both the WBA Super and IBF Light Welterweight Championship belts.
However, the jury is still out as to whether Khan’s chin will hold up against an accomplished hard hitter.
In the latter rounds against Marcos Maidana, Khan found himself in trouble and was only saved from a knockdown or knockout due to the intervention of Joe Cortez.
In a fight with Mayweather, Khan will have an opportunity to prove to the public that he can actually take a shot, especially one coming from someone as diverse in his boxing skill set as Mayweather.
3. The Master vs. the Young Pretender
3 of 5Mayweather has proven time and again, that he’s the real deal.
Mayweather mightn’t have fought the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto, but his resume is still lined with the defeats of championship calibre fighters—Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Márquez, Shane Mosley and most recently Victor Ortiz.
Can Khan the young gun, knock the master Mayweather off his throne like perch and thereby assume the mantle himself?
As Mayweather once quoted:
“I’m running my mouth a lot and I’m looking for a guy to shut me up. If you don’t shut me up I’m going to keep running my mouth.”
Now that’s what the public would pay good money to see.
2. the Boxing Speedster vs. the Pugilist Savant
4 of 5Mayweather is a wily old fox, well not old but you get my point. He’s been around the block—been there, done that.
Khan on the other hand is still young and even though he’s a double world champion, he’s still learning the tricks of the trade.
What Khan has got on his side is youth, but more importantly speed—his fast hands might cause Mayweather problems.
Mayweather has what you might call the ministry of defense—not a lot gets past his Philly Shell style bulwark.
Also in recent fights, Mayweather seems to have become more of the aggressor—taking the fight to his opponent.
The public would like to see whether Khan can use his speed to neutralize the defensive fortress and newly aggressive style of Mayweather, or whether Mayweather will use his boxing brain and ken to school the young Khan.
1. Witnessing Mayweather Lose His 42-0 Record
5 of 5Khan has his detractors but nowhere near in comparison to Mayweather.
Mayweather has felt the wrath of the public’s ire for supposedly refusing to fight the best in his division, most notably Pacquiao.
Suffice to say, some boxing purist and analyst see this as a ruse by Mayweather for keeping his undefeated record intact.
The thought that Mayweather could actually lose his (0) to a rising prospect like Khan, is enough to sell the fight in itself.
Khan is still three fights away from a potential match-up with Mayweather.
However, there are certain factors that are dependent on whether this fight will in actuality take place—two being, Mayweather might go on another 16-month furlough and Khan might end up losing any one of his next bouts.
One other factor—will Khan be able to make an impression at 147lbs as he’s done at 140?
We’ll see.
