Amir Khan: Does He Have the Best Chin in Boxing to Take on Floyd Mayweather?

Nedu ObiOct 9, 2011

Amir Khan, the current WBA Super and IBF Light Welterweight champion has been touted as maybe having the best chin in boxing.

Well, that’s according to his promoter Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. In a recent press conference, he had this to say about his granite chinned prospect:

"

“Watch and see, this you man [talking about Khan] will become pound for pound the best fighter in the world, no question about it. I really have zero questions about that because he has the skills, tremendous power in his punch. He has the heart of a lion and in the [Marcos] Maidana fight, he showed he might have the best chin in the sport of boxing.”

I think it’s an excellent idea promoting your fighter to the status of would-be contender to the best welterweights out there.

It’s a great business move by Schaefer, but does he honestly believe that anyone with a bit a boxing savvy let alone the pugilist purists are going to buy that load of hogwash?

Maybe he does, but I for one don’t.

This is the same Khan who got starched in 54 seconds of the first round by the one-dimensional brawling, Breidis Prescott more than three years ago—the same Prescott whom he refuses to give a rematch to.

I don’t blame him—the result would be the same.

Khan barely survived the latter rounds of his championship bout with Marcos Maidana, save for the interventions of one very competent referee—Joe Cortez.

Don’t get me wrong, Khan has improved leaps and bound since that horrendous blitzkrieg by Prescott, but that doesn’t mean that his chin has improved, not in the slightest.

Beating two washed up champions in Zab Judah and Marco Antonio Barrera does not make Khan top-tier championship material.

The more notoriety Khan acquires, the louder he seems to blow his own trumpet—first it was WBO Light Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley—tweeting about how ludicrous Bradley's impending fight with Joel Casamayor was.

And most recently he spoke about a future bout with Mayweather, whilst admonishing him for his trash-talking and disrespect towards boxing.

Is Khan sure he wants to take that leap into the premier league of the welterweight division?

Well if he does, he’s in for a whole lot of pain, a whole lot cussing and crying and he’ll be amazed to find that he’ll be charged rent for making the canvas his permanent home.

Khan couldn’t live with the likes of Floyd Mayweather—master of the check-hook, Viacheslav Senchenko, Andre Berto and  Victor Ortiz, even if he tried.

The best he could hope for would be to the stick, jab and run all night and that’s if he’s given the scope to. If any of the aforementioned fighters connect on Khan’s chin it sayonara—good night.

Khan is slated to defend his titles against Lamont Peterson on Dec. 10.

Golden Boy Promotions might think that Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KOs) is cannon fodder for their golden geese, but I reckon they’re in for a rude awakening come fight night.

I take Peterson to expose Khan’s glass jaw and end Khan’s fairy tale in dramatic fashion.
