NFL Power Rankings: Houston Texans and 8 Surefire Division Winners

John RozumOct 3, 2011

Week 5 of the NFL season will surely be more telling than the last, and considerably so. Many teams still have a lot of proving to do, while others are already atop the playoff race.

Additionally, certain franchises looking to get into the playoff hunt have a lot of ground to make up, especially within their own division.

Speaking of the divisions, here are the current teams who look like they'll win the divisional crown by the regular season's end:

AFC North: Baltimore Ravens

Ever since the Ravens bulldozed the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1, they've been the AFC North favorites.

And the loss at Tennessee now looks more legit as the Titans are 3-1.

Barring a complete breakdown, Baltimore is the clear front-runner to win the AFC North, and maybe the entire AFC.

AFC South: Houston Texans

The home victory over the defending AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers was big, but defeating Blitzburgh when you don't play nearly your best and without your best player (Andre Johnson) for the second half is even bigger.

The Texans are rolling with confidence, and even their road loss in New Orleans proves that this Houston team can contend with arguably the best this league has to offer.

AFC East: New England Patriots

Before the season began it was either the Jets or Pats. After Week 3 it looked like the Bills, but now the ball is back in New England's court, although Buffalo still has a one game lead.

After their Week 3 shootout, Week 4 was a test for the Bills to see if they could keep it rolling and if the Pats could respond on the road. Needless to say, Buffalo squandered off a lead much like the Pats did against them, while New England soundly defeated the Raiders in Oakland.

Until someone other than New England actually wins the AFC East, it's theirs for the keeping.

AFC West: San Diego Chargers

Arguably the weakest division in pro football, the Kansas City Chiefs looked like the best team on paper but then fell from grace because of injuries.

Now it's between Oakland and San Diego, and there's a solid case for and against both.

The Bolts have played a weak schedule but are known for starting off slow, while Oakland remains inconsistent but were 6-0 in the division in 2010.

Right now the Chargers are the favorite, but Oakland isn't far behind thanks to a solid running game.

NFC North: Green Bay Packers

The NFC North is arguably the most difficult division, as they possess the final two undefeated teams in Green Bay and Detroit.

Only difference is that Green Bay has had more convincing wins against better teams, while the Lions have struggled in playing a full 60 minutes for the past two weeks.

However, until Green Bay is dethroned, the NFC North, the NFC, and the Super Bowl are theirs to lose.

NFC South: New Orleans Saints

After their Week 1 loss on the road in Green Bay, the New Orleans Saints have ran off three straight wins and look to be the only team who can oust the Packers this season.

That being said, fellow division rivals Tampa Bay and Atlanta are still formidable opponents, as are the Carolina Panthers despite being 1-3.

The Saints are the best team in this division, but it may be the most challenging from top to bottom.

NFC East: New York Giants

Had the Giants played Week 1 against Washington the way they're playing right now, New York could very well be 4-0. But that loss proved to be the motivation they needed, and the Big Blue Wrecking Crew has now won three straight.

As for the rest of the division, Washington looks to be the only contender since Dallas still remains inconsistent, and let's not even get started on the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFC West: San Francisco 49ers

Other than the AFC West, the NFC West may very well be the NFL's worst division, and with the 49ers as its only current winning team, they are the division's best by default.

Both Arizona and Seattle are 1-3, and St. Louis resides at 0-4.

However, with so much football left to be played, don't be surprised if this is the last division to be won just like in 2010, except for the NFC West's sake, let's hope they actually have a winning record.
