Which Teams Missed Chance to Select Terrelle Pryor in NFL Supplemental Draft
The Oakland Raiders' addition of Terrelle Pryor through the NFL Supplemental draft yesterday was somewhat surprising because the Raiders don't have the worst quarterback situation in the league—that mantra goes to the Washington Redskins/Miami Dolphins.
However, it does highlight the value of a franchise quarterback and the desperation of teams that do not have one. Even though Pryor is far from a franchise quarterback, or even an average one at this stage, the potential he brings being a former first overall recruit from high school makes him worth the risk in the Raiders' eyes.
In the NFL you either have your quarterback or you have your quarterback of the future. Teams without one of those have nothing.

Therefore, any team in need of one of those missed an opportunity with Terrelle Pryor. Pryor's status as an NFL-caliber quarterback is in question, but as a developmental prospect he would have been a good addition.
The Indianapolis Colts are a team that generally is totally ignored when quarterback prospects are being touted for the NFL. However, the value of a good backup is currently being exposed in Indianapolis, as Peyton Manning's injury looks set to prevent him from playing a regular season game for the first time.
Pryor couldn't have helped the Colts immediately, as he is going to serve a five-game suspension at the start of this season and is a developmental prospect for the future either way.
However, Manning's injury is reflective of his advanced age. Curtis Painter is not the future and now is about the time for the team to consider finding his long-term replacement. Pryor may not be Aaron Rodgers, but the Colts need to start thinking about Manning's successor the way the Packers did a few years ago.
There is one team that could have looked at Terrelle Pryor and considered him as a starting quarterback earlier than any other.
The Buffalo Bills have a very good quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has excelled with little help around him—a direct dig at the quality of pass protection in Buffalo—but he has yet to show enough to be a franchise quarterback.
The reason the Bills could have jumped for Pryor is because of his athleticism. Chan Gailey loves working with athletic quarterbacks and has a track record of getting the best out of them.
The Oakland Raiders may have been the best fit for Terrelle Pryor from an attitude and resilience standpoint, but as far as carving out a successful NFL career, landing in Indianapolis or Buffalo may have benefited his career and those respective franchises to a greater degree.
