It's nuts to get inside a cage with another human being who wants to knock you into unconsciousness. In that sense, every mixed martial artist is just a tad deranged.
But the following list is dedicated to the best of the best. The guys who have worked at hard at becoming the craziest guy in all of MMA.
Check through to find wacky quotes, crazy hijinks and some down right strange behavior.
Between the constant "YES!" shouting, the nickname changes and the desire to keep fighting even when his face is leaking blood all over the canvas, Diego Sanchez has done his best to be labeled certifiably crazy.
Sanchez is the only guy on this list who made it because of his fighting style, as the shouting and name change isn't insane; just kind of weird.
The UFC welterweight has proven that he loves getting punched in the face. He let B.J. Penn do it to him. John Hathaway kneed him into oblivion at UFC 114. Most recently, Martin Kampmann kept punching him until his hand hurt too much.
Through all of that punishment, Sanchez kept coming forward. He never quit. He didn't stop and think, "Wait, I'm losing a lot of blood, maybe I should stop."
Nope. He kept fighting.
Things that a crazy person might do:
- Come in overweight in three of your past six bouts.
- Constantly talk trash leading up to your title eliminator bout.
- Sucker punch the guy who just controlled you for three rounds after the final bell has rung.
- Threaten to pull out of a title fight because Zuffa bought the organization you were fighting for.
Thus is the life of Paul Daley. Hopefully he stays in his fight against Nick Diaz at their Strikeforce event on April 9. Speaking of Nick Diaz...
Let's just leave some famous Nick Diaz quotes here:
""He kinda just put his head down and looped some f****** punch out there that smacked me...I was like what the f***?!"
"He's tough for a little Japanese f*****."
"You see that s***? He hit me with a f***** haduken punch."
All of the above were in relation to his bout with Takanori Gomi in PRIDE.
"Here comes Joe Riggs' roided ass doin his f****** stupid little stand up dance, with billy rush or whoever that f*** that guy is, so I f***** clocked him....he came all the way over to my side of the hospital."
"And then the f****** security ran in and grabbed me. I stopped fighting the security and s***. I was like, all right, all right, all right. I’m sorry. I’m sorry because they were about to mace us or some s***. Seriously, they were going to mace us.
"The cops came in. I figured the cops would have arrested us, but they were Nick Diaz fans or whatever. One of them got an autograph. They were like, hell no I’m not arresting this guy. He’s my favorite fighter. I couldn’t believe it."
The two above were on his hospital brawl with Joe Riggs.
"Then I get hit with a little punch or something that just kind of skins across it sideways because there is no grease on there. So it just tears it wide open. Then I got this big v***** f****** chilling on the side of my face."
"All the guys from TUF with their dyed hair and painted nails, I just want to beat the f*** out of them"
Just two more random quotes.
And if you still don't think Nick Diaz is slightly insane, check out this list from Middle Easy.
Let's say you weigh approximately 190 pounds and you are a Japanese wrestler.
Would you fight humongous mixed martial artists like Jimmy Ambriz, Sokoudjou, Hong Man Choi, Bob Sapp, Don Frye, Zuluzinho, Butterbean, Mirko Cro Cop, Giant Silva, Gilbert Yvel, Wanerlei Silva, Rampage Jackson and Semmy Schilt?
Yeah, I wouldn't either.
But Minowaman totally would. And he did. Making him insane.
To say Gilbert Yvel has a bit of nasty streak would be a little bit of an understatement.
While the Dutch heavyweight has cooled down in recent years, he was often under fire during his early fights for repeated infractions.
In 1998, he was disqualified for biting his opponent.
In 2001, he was disqualified for repeatedly raking his fingers across Don Frye's face and pushing his thumbs into his eyes in order to not be taken down by Frye's wrestling.
The video is from 2004, when Yvel punched out a referee. The ref was attempting to place them back in position, but Yvel simply refused. After becoming frustrated with the ref insisting that the go back to the starting position, Yvel knocked him out.
Finally, a match in 2007 had to be canceled because Nevada wouldn't allow Yvel to fight in the state due to his past behavior.
Needless to say, I would stay on his good side.
When someone willingly changes his name from Jon Koppenhaver to War Machine, something may be off with them.
Jon Kop, er, War Machine has had a history of run-ins with the law, a brief appearance as a pornographic actor and a whole host of crazy behavior.
Machine was originally arrested in 2007 for striking a man in the face and choking him unconscious in a parking lot scuffle.
He seemingly got his life in line and appeared on The Ultimate Fighter, where he was eliminated during the elimination round.
He then turned to porn, starring in a few movies until he decided to go crazy.
At the birthday party for a pornographic actress, he apparently flipped and attacked multiple people and ran off before the police arrived.
While on The Ultimate Fighter, Junie Browning was nearly kicked off multiple times for alcoholism and anger management issues. He threw glasses at two fellow castmates while on the show.
Once off, he was arrested for assaulting three nurses.
Browning had taken 16 pills in order to harm himself and was taken to a hospital immediately.
Once at the hospital, Browning pushed a female nurse, punched a male nurse and kicked another male nurse.
He was released from the UFC shortly after.
Just watch the video. Some high points:
- Bennett butt scooting and talking on his cell phone while walking out for a fight.
- Ripping open stuffed animals while having his name announced before a fight.
- Smelling an opponent's armpits at the stare down.
- Making faces while the referee attempts to give him instructions.
- Doing backflips off of the cage after victories.
- Climbing on top of the cage during fights.
The mastermind behind the largest cash robbery in British history, Lee Murray managed to steal 53 million pounds from a bank. He was eventually caught and is currently under arrest for the crimes.
Outside of the bank robbery, Murray has also been in multiple high profile altercations.
After UFC 38, it was reported that Murray was apart of an altercation that included Tito Ortiz. Murray claims to have knocked Ortiz out with one punch. The Huntington Beach Bad Boy denies the claims.
In 2005, Lee was stabbed in another altercation that left him near death. He underwent immediate surgery to repair his punctured lung and severed artery. He needed to be resuscitated four times during the operation due to loss of blood.
I can't do the video justice.
