Golden V: The History of the WWE Tag Team Championships

    Welcome to the fifth edition of Golden.

    This week's edition will give a history of the WWE Tag Team Championships. The WWE Tag Team titles only date back to 2002. They were previously known as the WWE Unified Tag Team Championships.

    There have been 31 championship teams.

    Next week's edition of Golden will give the history of the TNA X Division Championship.

1. Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit

    Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit won the finals of a WWE Tag Team Championship tournament and are recognized as the inaugural champions.

    It was Oct. 22, 2002 at No Mercy.

    They held the titles for only 16 days.

2. Edge and Rey Mysterio

    Edge and Mysterio would beat Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit in a two-out-of-three falls match to win the titles on an episode of Smackdown.

    The tag team would have a short reign of 12 days.

3. Los Guerreros

    Los Guerreros won the titles at Survivor Series 2002 in a three-way elimination tag team match, also including Edge & Mysterio and Angle & Benoit.

    They held the belts for 79 days. 

4. Team Angle

    Team Angle (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) captured the Tag Team gold on the Feb. 6, 2003, edition of Smackdown.

    They had a 103-day title reign.

5. Eddie Guerrero and Tajiri

5 of 40

    These two won the titles in a ladder match at Judgment Day 2003.

    Tajiri served as a replacement for an injured Chavo Guerrero. 

    These two held the titles for 44 days.

6. World's Greatest Tag Team

    The World's Greatest Tag Team left Angle and won their second tag titles on the July 3, 2003, episode of Smackdown.

    They held the titles for 77 days.

7. Los Guerreros

    Los Guerreros beat TWGTT on the September 18, 2003, edition of Smackdown.

    They would keep the titles for 35 days.

8. Basham Brothers

    The Basham Brothers won the titles in October 2003 and had a 105-day title reign.

9. Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty

9 of 40

    Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty defeated The Basham Brothers on the Feb. 5, 2004, episode of Smackdown.

    They had a 77-day run as champions.

10. Charlie Haas and Rico

    The tag titles changed hands on Smackdown again, and that trend will continue for the next six slides.

    Charlie Haas and Rico beat Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty on April 22, 2004.

    They held the titles for 56 days.

11. Dudley Boyz

11 of 40

    The Dudley Boyz would get a run with the belts starting on June 17, 2004.

    They had a 21-day title reign.

12. Billy Kidman and Paul London

    London and Kidman would defeat The Dudley Boyz on July 8, 2004.

    These two held the gold for 63 days.

13. Rene Dupree and Kenzo Suzuki

    This is quite an odd pairing.

    Dupree and Suzuki won the titles on the Sept. 8, 2004, edition of Smackdown. They would hold the titles for 91 days.

14. Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam

    Mysterio and RVD would defeat Dupree and Suzuki on the December 9, 2004, episode of Smackdown.

    RVD and Mysterio would hold the titles for 35 days.

15. Basham Brothers

    The Basham Brothers would win a fatal four way elimination match, defeating the teams of Mark Jindrak & Luther Reigns, Booker T & Eddie Guerrero, and RVD & Mysterio.

    The Bashams' second reign would last 40 days.

16. Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero

    Guerrero and Mysterio would defeat The Bashams on Feb. 20, 2005, at No Mercy.

    This duo would have the belts for 57 days.

17. MNM

17 of 40

    MNM beat Mysterio and Guerrero on Smackdown and kept the titles for 97 days until The Great American Bash 2005.

18. Legion of Doom

    Animal and Heidenreich would be the team to beat MNM at The Great American Bash.

    This LOD remake would have the belts for 93 days.

19. MNM

19 of 40

    MNM would regain their titles on Smackdown in a fatal four-way tag team match.

    Defending champions The Legion of Doom vs. MNM vs. The Mexicools vs. William Regal and Paul Burchill.

    MNM would have the gold for 49 days.

20. Batista and Rey Mysterio

    Batista and Mysterio would win the tag titles from MNM on Smackdown.

    They would only hold the titles for 14 days.

21. MNM

21 of 40

    MNM regained the tag belts from Batista and Mysterio on Smackdown.

    MNM would have a good third reign of 145 days.

22. Paul London and Brian Kendrick

22 of 40

    London and Kendrick would defeat MNM at Judgment Day 2006.

    London and Kendrick would have a record-setting title reign of 331 days.

23. Deuce 'N Domino

23 of 40

    Deuce 'N Domino would end London and Kendrick's historic run and have a pretty good one themselves.

    They had the titles for 133 days.

24. MVP and Matt Hardy

    MVP and Hardy defeated Deuce 'N Domino on the Aug. 31, 2007, Smackdown.

    MVP and Hardy would have a 77-day title reign.

25. Miz and Morrison

25 of 40

    Miz and Morrison. Possibly the best WWE tag team of the last decade.

    Miz and Morrison defeated MVP and Hardy and brought the tag titles to ECW.

    They had the titles for 250 days.

26. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder

    Hawkins and Ryder won the titles at The Great American Bash 2008 in a fatal four -ay match.

    Miz and Morrison vs. Hawkins and Ryder vs. Jesse and Festus vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle.

    Hawkins and Ryder would have a 63-day title reign.

27. Carlito and Primo

    Carlito and Primo would win both the WWE Tag Team titles as well as the World Tag Team titles. They unified the championships at WrestleMania.

    The Colons held the gold for 280 days.

28. Chris Jericho and Edge/Big Show

    Jericho and Edge won the titles in a triple threat involving the Colons and Legacy. Edge got injured and had to vacate his half of the tag titles. Jericho chose a new partner at Night of Champions.

    Jericho had the titles with Edge for 28 days.

    He shared the titles with Big Show for 140 days.

    Jericho held the titles for a combined 168 days.

29. DX

    DX (Shawn Michaels & Triple H) won the titles at the 2009 Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view in a TLC match.

    DX had a 57-day title reign.

30. ShowMiz

    ShowMiz would win a triple threat match on RAW to become the WWE Tag Team Champions.

    The match included ShowMiz, DX and The Straight Edge Society.

    ShowMiz had a 77-day reign.

31. Hart Dynasty

    The Hart Dynasty was the first team to receive the new WWE Tag Team Championship belts. 

    They had a 146-day reign.

32. Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre

    Rhodes and McIntyre won the titles at Night of Champions 2010 in a match involving The Usos, Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov, and Evan Bourne & Mark Henry.

    They held the titles for 35 days.

33. John Cena and David Otunga

    The old Nexus members, John Cena and David Otunga, won the titles from Rhodes and McIntyre at Bragging Rights 2010.

    They only held the belts for one day. 

34.) Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel

    The following night on RAW, Otunga laid down for Nexus members Slater and Gabriel.

    Slater and Gabriel had a 42-day run as champions.

35.) Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov

    Santino and Kozlov won the titles in a four-way elimination tag team match on RAW.

    The match featured Nexus members and champions Slater and Gabriel vs. Santino and Kozlov vs. The Usos vs. Mark Henry and Yoshi Tatsu.

    Santino and Kozlov held the titles for 76 days.

36.) Slater and Gabriel

    Officially in The Corre, Slater and Gabriel won the tag titles again, this time at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view in 2011.

    They had a one-day title reign.

37.) The Miz and John Cena

37 of 40

    Miz and Cena defeated Corre members Slater and Gabriel the night following Elimination Chamber. 

    They won and lost the titles in the same night. Their reign lasted roughly 15 minutes.

38. Slater and Gabriel

38 of 40

    Slater and Gabriel won the titles back the same night they lost them.

    They are currently the tag team champions. Their reign is 15 days and counting.
