Golden IV: The History of the TNA Legends/Global/TV Championship

Charlie GJun 7, 2018

This is the fourth of 12 editions of Golden.

This week's edition will focus on the TNA Legends/Global/TV Championship. The title is still fairly new and hasn't seen many title changes.

There has been a total of 10 reigns shared among eight superstars.

The name of the championship changed three times. The physical appearance of the belt had two designs.

Under the "Legends Championship" name, it had the word "Legends" written on it. Once it changed to the Television Championship, TNA replaced the word "Legends" with "Television."

Golden V should be released next week: the history of the WWE Tag Team Championships.

1. Booker T

1 of 11

You can thank Booker T for debuting this title.

In the days of The Main Event Mafia, Booker T revealed the belt and named it The Legends Championship. Who would hold this belt? He would, of course.

He named himself champion on Oct. 23, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nev.

He held the belt for 143 days.

2. AJ Styles

2 of 11

AJ Styles would defeat Booker T on March 15, 2009, at Destination X, making him the new Legends Champion.

Winning the Legends Championship would make Styles the only Grand Slam Champion in TNA history.

His reign would last 126 days.

3. Kevin Nash

3 of 11

Kevin Nash defeated AJ Styles at Victory Road on July 19, 2009.

This reign would be the shortest in the belt's history.

Nash held the title for only three days.

4. Mick Foley

4 of 11

I actually met Mick Foley once. I believe it was around 2006 or 2007.

I live in New York and I was with my family at the airport waiting for our flight, when suddenly Mick Foley walked into the room. My older brother noticed him and told me.

I went over to where Foley was waiting and introduced myself. I got an autograph and picture with him. He wrote Mick Foley & Socko.

I still have it to this day. Interestingly enough, Mick was going to Orlando, Fla. Hmm...any ideas, anyone?

Anyway, Mick Foley would defeat Kevin Nash to become the fourth Legends Champion in TNA.

Mick would hold the title for a short 25 days.

5. Kevin Nash

5 of 11

Nash would regain his belt at Hard Justice in 2009.

His second reign was longer. Sixty days longer.

His last reign would be for 63 days.

6. Eric Young

6 of 11

At Bound For Glory 2009, Nash would put the title on the line in a three-way match.

Defending Champion Kevin Nash vs. Hernandez vs. Eric Young.

EY would walk away as the new champion after the match.

Later he would rename the Legends Championship to the "Global Championship" and add the stipulation that the belt cannot be defended on US soil.

EY's anti-US reign would last 101 days.

7. Rob Terry

7 of 11

During a TNA live event in Cardiff, Wales, "The Freak" Rob Terry beat Eric Young for the Global Championship.

Terry would eventually ditch the whole "No defending the title on US soil" concept.

"The Freak" would hold the title for 167 days.

8. AJ Styles

8 of 11

AJ Styles would win the Global title with help of fellow Fortune member Kazarian.

AJ would rename the belt the TNA Television Championship. He also said it would be defended every week on iMPACT! and not on pay-per-view. He lied.

AJ would hold the belt for 145 days.

9.) Douglas Williams

9 of 11

That picture looks pretty cool.

Former Fortune member Douglas Williams would defeat AJ Styles for the belt at Final Resolution 2010.

Williams had a short reign at only 35 days. Too short, in my opinion.

10. Abyss

10 of 11

Abyss would serve as AJ's replacement in a TV Title match against Williams at Genesis 2011.

Abyss would win the match and become the new TV Champion.

Lately Abyss, and the TV Title, have been out of action due to Crimson stabbing Abyss with Janice. Will we see Crimson feud with Abyss for the title when "The Monster" returns?

Abyss' current reign is 53 days and counting.

Conclusion

11 of 11

The championship's name changed three times. From Legends to Global and currently TV Championship.

Since debuting the championship changed hands 10 times among eight people.

Hamada is the only woman to ever receive a shot at this title (Eric Young vs. Hamada).

AJ Styles held this belt while it was under all three names. AJ's first run with it was as the Legends Title. His final reign with it was as the Global Championship, later named TV Title by AJ himself.

Longest Championship reign: Rob Terry, 167 days.

Shortest Championship reign: Kevin Nash, 3 days.

Most Championship reigns: Kevin Nash (2) and AJ Styles (2)

List of Combined Reigns:

1.) AJ Styles had two title reigns for a combined 271 days.

2.) Rob Terry had one reign for 167 days.

3.) Booker T had one reign for 143 days.

4.) Eric Young had one reign for 101 days.
