Wake Up NFL: Time To End the Pro Bowl

No NameJan 20, 2010

Major League baseball's All-Star game is probably the best of the three major professional sports today.

The NBA All-Star Weekend is somewhat entertaining, but the game itself doesn't offer a lot; just Shaq leading a fast break and throwing the ball out of bounds on a behind the back pass.

The NFL's All-Star game, could be the worst of all three.

With the Pro Bowl just two weeks away, players are dropping like flies, beginning with Tom Brady and Larry Fitzgerald today. Both players have officially pulled out of the game because of injuries. The replacements for those players have been named; Matt Schaub and Steve Smith of the Giants. Not exactly jaw droppers.

With MLB, you get the home run derby, and the game itself is actually fun to watch.

The NBA All-Star Weekend has been on a steady decline in recent years, especially now that LeBron James is officially out of the dunk competition. Gone are the days of Jordan, Wilkins, Webb, Carter, and even Kobe.

The NFL really doesn't offer the fan anything...or the players for that matter.

The main question I have for the players, is why would you want to play in this game? This game is the least watched out of the three main sports, and there is little, if anything to gain, and a lot to lose. The risk of injury is high, and every owner in the NFL bites their nails and prays for the final whistle at the end of the game.

The game itself is boring, because of substitutions, lack of a playbook, and virtually no defense. Outside of that, there is nothing else to watch; which may be a good thing.

Now that the NFL has made the brilliant decision to move the game up to the week before the Super Bowl, those players that are playing in the big game, won't be playing in the Pro Bowl. This in all likelihood, means no Peyton Manning, and either no Brees or no Favre. No Reggie Bush or no Adrian Peterson.

It's time the NFL realizes that this game really doesn't bring anything to the sport. They need to get rid of this game, you can still name players to the All-Pro Team, or a Pro Bowl team, but you don't actually need to play a game.

If for some reason, you find the Pro Bowl exciting and can't wait for the kickoff, then I guess you have something to look forward to in a couple of weeks. The players didn't used to mind, because it was a nice relaxing trip to Hawaii to hang with friends.

This year the game will feature Vince Young throwing to Brandon Marshall, while Aaron Rodgers tosses to Miles Austin. The rosters, after subtracting injured players, and those who are playing in the Super Bowl, will be full of mediocre players that just don't belong. Add to that, two miserable/embarrassed coaches that just got kicked in the teeth, Wade Phillips and Norv Turner, that will be "coaching" these teams.

Not only are the rosters going to be dull, but the game is in Miami, which is a nice city, but it's not Hawaii. There really is no reason to watch this game anymore, let alone actually playing it.

What is it going to take for the NFL to stick a fork in this one?
