Conor McGregor Arrested by NYPD After Attacking Bus Before UFC 223
UFC fighter Conor McGregor turned himself into the New York Police Department following Thursday's incident at media day for UFC 223.
TMZ Sports reported the news.
Tom Winter of NBC News reported McGregor is expected to be charged with assault.
According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com, McGregor and the group he was with damaged a bus and injured fighters Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg.
TMZ Sports captured a video (note: contains NSFW language) that shows McGregor lifting and throwing a dolly into a bus window. Okamoto cited multiple witnesses who said the fighter was also throwing things at the bus, which was taking fellow UFC fighters to a hotel.
Steven Marrocco of MMAjunkie noted there wasn't a warrant issued for McGregor's arrest in the immediate aftermath of the incident, although he granted "that could change" if the fighter didn't agree to an interview with the New York Police Department.
As for Chiesa, his coach, John Wood, said he was taken to the hospital for a number of cuts just two days prior to his UFC 223 fight against Anthony Pettis, per Okamoto.
Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting reported Chiesa's Saturday fight against Anthony Pettis was canceled because of the injuries.
"They stormed the building, got down to the loading docks where the fighters were getting on buses and started to attack the buses with trash cans, dollies," UFC President Dana White said of McGregor and the group that was with him, per Okamoto. "This is the most disgusting thing that has ever happened in the history of this company."
White said UFC fighter Artem Lobov was part of the group with McGregor and wouldn't fight Alex Caceres at UFC 223 as originally scheduled.
The UFC announced McGregor and others involved would not be allowed to attend Saturday's UFC 223.
This entire incident comes after an extended absence from the Octagon for McGregor. His last UFC fight came in November 2016 when he prevailed against Eddie Alvarez with a knockout to capture the lightweight belt.
Part of the reason for the break, though, was a highly publicized boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in which McGregor lost to the 50-0 fighter in the 10th round via technical knockout. McGregor handled himself fairly well in the early going of the fight but was eventually overmatched against the boxer.
