Super Bowl Commercials 2018: List of Best Ads and Video Highlights

Andrew GouldFeb 5, 2018

Before the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LII, viewers were treated to a bevy of attention-grabbing commercials.

As usual, advertisers leveraged their grand expenditures differently. Some opted for cheap, low-brow humor. Others tugged at the heart with sentimentality. Most of them paid familiar faces to push their products, making celebrity endorsements nearly impossible to avoid when picking Sunday's best spots.

Let's take a look at a few commercials that stole the show while NBC's broadcast cut away from the gridiron.

Tourism Australia: 'Dundee Super Bowl Ad'

Don't be embarrassed to admit you thought you were watching a real trailer for a Crocodile Dundee remake starring Danny McBride and Chris Hemsworth. Given the sheer volume of nostalgic reboots, it would not have been a major stretch.

Besides, Hemsworth was also confused. Per Adweek's Rober Klara, the Thor star struggled to distinguish the blurred lines between a trailer and parody.

"I kept asking the director, 'Hang on. So I know it's a movie, but it's not a movie but a commercial. And I'm playing a—wait … at which point am I playing a character or playing me?'" Hemsworth relayed to Klara.

"And in the end," he added, "[the director] was like, 'We don't really know, either. Just have fun with it.'"

Midway through the ad, the movie shifts into a clear Australia tourism promotion. Yet the duo meshed so well that a studio will probably try to make this clever joke into an actual movie.

Amazon: 'Alexa Loses Her Voice'

Amazon recruited Gordon Ramsay, Cardi B, Rebel Wilson and Sir Anthony Hopkins for a 90-second ad where Alexa can no longer handle her duties. Maybe it got the idea from the South Park episode where townspeople take up jobs filling in for the automated personal assistant.

Last year, Hopkins claimed that he would "never tarnish my name by selling you something" in a tongue-in-cheek Super Bowl commercial for Turbo Tax. It appears he softened his stance, which is a good thing for Amazon.

The renowned actor does not mail in his brief but chilling line, and his recent run in Westworld will make some viewers wonder what he did to Brandon.

Michelob Ultra: 'The Perfect Fit ft. Chris Pratt'

While playing lovable dimwit Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation, Chris Pratt underwent a massive body transformation to star in Guardians of the Galaxy. In order to explain why he suddenly looked like a Hollywood A-lister, the character said in passing that he cut weight simply by not drinking beer.

Oops. Michelob Ultra apparently was not concerned about keeping continuity with a fictional character from a concluded sitcom, as Pratt trained to promote the adult brew in a meta commercial about him preparing for a commercial.

A montage shows him delving deep into his character's motivations. In the extended version, he even creates a persona named Tommy Ultra, who would probably get along great with Johnny Karate.

While it may have fallen flat had Michelob chosen the wrong personality, Pratt's affable energy plays perfectly as misguided enthusiasm. In the end, he's just an extra in a beer commercial.

But what training did he undergo for the actual ad? This seems like a case for Burt Macklin, FBI.

Avocados from Mexico: '#GuacWorld'

According to Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch, the average 30-second Super Bowl ad cost $5 million. That typically limits the participating brands to prominent leaders of profitable industries.

For the fourth consecutive year, Avocados from Mexico delightfully invaded the mainstream spotlight. President Alvaro Luque discussed the company's Super Bowl presence with Tom Karst of The Packer.

"It is such a big deal for us," Luque said. "It is so big that you can't really compare it to other things we do."

Given their limited national exposure when compared to mainstays like Doritos and Coca Cola, they grab the audience's attention with absurd humor. Instead of hiring Pratt, Hemsworth or another superhero named "Chris" to peddle the product, character actor Chris Elliott randomly appears in the background amid chaos.

If there's one criticism, they missed an easy joke about Tom Brady's avocado ice cream. It would have fit perfectly into the premise of avocado tasting good on everything.

NFL: 'Touchdown Celebrations to Come'

It wouldn't have been a true Super Bowl loss for the New England Patriots without Eli Manning stealing the show.

Before watching their NFC East rivals seize the Lombardi Trophy, New York Giants fans witnessed Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. recreate the famous Dirty Dancing routine. Beckham's dance lessons in Gridiron Heights really worked wonders on his quarterback, who moved gracefully before lifting up his wide receiver.

Peyton Manning usually dominates advertising real estate, but his younger brother turned a solid Universal Orlando Resort ad into an afterthought.

While they had little to celebrate during a 2-14 season, at least the Giants are prepared to celebrate any touchdowns in 2018. If they draft Manning's successor, they need to make him initially learn with a clipboard so the tandem can perform this regimen in an actual game.
