Lakers Rumors: LA Debating Between Rajon Rondo, Younger Players for Backup PG
The Los Angeles Lakers are mulling their options for the backup role behind rookie Lonzo Ball at point guard, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:
Ball, the No. 2 pick in this year's NBA draft, will be the presumed starter at the 1. He'll likely be joined in the backcourt by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope—who reportedly signed a one-year deal with the team per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com—along with a projected starting frontcourt of Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle and Brook Lopez.
Rondo appears to be the frontrunner for the backup role, with Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reporting on Monday: "Despite committing $18M for Caldwell-Pope, Lakers still trying to find a way to sign Rondo. Lakers have a $4.3 million exception to use."
Rondo is coming off an up-and-down season with the Bulls that saw him average 7.8 points, 6.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds. The Lakers reportedly believe he would be a good presence in the locker room, per Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times:
As for the other three options Shelburne mentioned, the 22-year-old Ennis averaged 7.7 points and 2.4 assists for the Lakers in 22 appearances last season, shooting 38.9 percent from the field.
Clark, 26, notched 6.8 points and shot 37.4 percent from three in a reserve role with the Golden State Warriors last year. And the journeyman Canaan, 26, scored 4.6 points per game in 39 games with the Chicago Bulls.
Rondo, however, would offer the most experience to the role and could potentially be had for the $4.3 million exception.
