Kirk Cousins Talks Postgame Exchange with Redskins GM After Win vs. Packers
Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins outdueled Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday during a 42-24 victory, but it was his actions after the game that turned some heads.
John Keim of ESPN.com said the quarterback ran off the field and shouted "How do you like me now?" toward general manager Scot McCloughan after he threw for 375 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Master Tesfatsion of the Washington Post shared the exchange:
Cousins was interviewed on 106.7 The Fan on Tuesday and said there wasn't any hidden meaning behind his comments even though his contract situation is hanging in the balance.
"No, there's nothing," he said, via Keim. "I was just excited coming off the field with emotion. I would prefer for that to happen with no cameras and no microphones. But I ran into him on the field where there were cameras and microphones. We're both competitors who want to win desperately and both feeling great in that moment."
Keim noted Cousins is playing under the franchise tag this year. He said the quarterback wanted $20 million a year, while Washington's best offer was $16 million.
Cousins is only 28 years old and figures to cash in this offseason if he continues to play at a high level. He has 3,091 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the year and has led Washington to a 6-1-1 stretch after starting 0-2.
He also has seven touchdowns to just one interception in his last three games and is averaging 365 yards per contest in that span.
Cousins stressed that McCloughan was the one who encouraged him down the stretch of the 2015 campaign, when he posted 19 touchdowns and two picks in his final eight games.
While the contract looms over Cousins' long-term future, Washington has legitimate postseason aspirations the rest of the way in 2016. It is 6-3-1 and looking up at the 9-1 Dallas Cowboys and 7-3 New York Giants in the NFC East but would be a wild-card team if the season ended today.
If Cousins continues to play like he has in recent weeks, he will have a playoff berth and new contract waiting for him in the near future.
