Liverpool vs. Manchester United: Jose Mourinho's Key Pre-Match Presser Quotes

Rory MarsdenOct 14, 2016

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has called on fans to refrain from offensive chanting when the Red Devils meet Liverpool at Anfield on Monday.

In a big boost for United ahead of the crucial Premier League clash, Mourinho also confirmed that Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have recovered from their respective injuries.

Liverpool and United released a joint statement on Thursday asking that fans refrain from "offensive and discriminatory behaviour."

The Portuguese manager echoed the sentiment in his pre-match press conference, requesting that past chants referencing the Hillsborough and Munich Air disasters not resurface, per the Times' Paul Hirst:

As well as Shaw and Mkhitaryan's return to fitness, Mourinho relayed the positive news that his squad has escaped unscathed from the recent international break, per United:

The Red Devils will need all their top players for Monday's clash if they are to pick up three points.

United have prevailed in each of their last four league meetings with Liverpool. However, they lost 2-0 when they visited Anfield for a UEFA Europa League clash in March.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds are in flying form having won their last five games on the bounce in all competitions.

But in a game of such magnitude between such bitter rivals, form often has little bearing on the final result.

Mourinho has been involved in some of the biggest derby matches across Europe during his managerial career, and he said that a United clash with Liverpool is comparable to matches like the Spanish Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, per Hirst:

The Red Devils manager is clearly relishing the trip to Anfield, where he has been many times before as Chelsea boss, per Samuel Luckhurst in the Mirror:

"I always like to play at Anfield. I have won big matches and lost big matches there, so I cannot say I like to go there as I am always successful as this is not true. I like to go there, I like the atmosphere and the characteristics of the matches."

United will be desperate to get back to winning ways having squandered a number of gilt-edged chances and having to settle for a 1-1 draw last time out against Stoke City.

A victory over Liverpool on Monday would draw them level on points with the Reds and potentially edge them closer to the top of the Premier League table depending on other results.

It would also give them a huge boost ahead of a tricky run of fixtures that includes a UEFA Europa League clash with Fenerbahce, a visit to Chelsea in the Premier League and League Cup meeting with Manchester City.

Mourinho has been involved in numerous clashes of such magnitude in the past and is unlikely to be daunted by the occasion, but he will need his players to step up if United are to claim a big win on Merseyside.
