Why the Saints can cover the spread

The Saints are trying to bounce back after opening their season by losing a tough one at home to the Oakland Raiders 35-34. New Orleans led the Raiders 24-10 midway through the third quarter and 34-27 late, but it gave up a touchdown and a two-point conversion with 50 seconds to go to fall down by a point. The Saints then drove 34 yards in five plays, but newly signed kicker Wil Lutz just missed a 61-yard field-goal attempt at the buzzer that would have won the game.

New Orleans racked up 507 yards of offense on the day, and Brees hit the 400-yard passing mark for the 14th time in his career. But what hurt was the 75-yard touchdown run by Oakland's Jalen Richard midway through the fourth quarter that tied the game.

As far as this series goes, New Orleans beat the Giants last November 52-49, outgaining New York by almost 200 yards.

Why the Giants can cover the spread

New York opened its season last week with a 20-19 victory against the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants trailed early 6-0 but scored on an Eli Manning touchdown pass to take a 7-6 lead. They later trailed 9-7 until Manning tossed another touchdown pass just before halftime. And finally, down 19-13, Manning threw his third touchdown pass of the day, a three-yard hookup with Victor Cruz with six minutes left that gave New York the lead for good.

The Giants got outplayed on the stat sheet, losing in total yards by a 328-316 margin and time of possession by a 36:43-23:17 split, but the defense stiffened when it had to, holding the Cowboys to just one offensive touchdown and twice holding them to short field goals.

Rent-a-kicker Randy Bullock missed an extra point last week, but regular kicker Josh Brown returns from suspension this week.

Smart pick

These teams just met for a wild and crazy affair in New Orleans last November, a game decided by three points, and there's good reason to believe something similar might go down Sunday. In a game that easily could go either way, the smart play is the underdog plus the points.

Betting trends

The total has gone over in six of the Giants' last seven games at home, per the Odds Shark NFL Database.

The total has gone over in 12 of the Saints' last 16 games in Week 2.

The Saints are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games as underdogs.
