Philadelphia 76ers: A
There may not have been much suspense, but the Philadelphia 76ers got their man when they nabbed LSU's Ben Simmons with the first pick in the 2016 draft.
And it's not hard to see why the City of Brotherly Love is excited about the Australian phenom, as College Basketball Reference pointed out on Twitter:
A versatile athlete with an uncanny feel for the game at 6'10'', Simmons will arrive in Philadelphia and immediately be the team's top playmaker. In other words, conventional positional labels shouldn't dictate how he's deployed.
"I think there will be some Draymond-like usage with (Simmons)," Sixers head coach Brett Brown said Thursday night, according to Calkins Media's Tom Moore.
So while Simmons may not be labeled a point guard from day one, it's plenty fair to classify him as a do-it-all point-forward who will have a big hand in elevating the team's offense to new heights.
"I think you can put me anywhere (on court)," Simmons said, per Moore. "I'm really looking forward to this."
The 19-year-old will be joined in Philadelphia by Timothe Luwawu and Furkan Korkmaz, whom the Sixers added at No. 24 and No. 26 overall, respectively.
And with Joel Embiid reportedly cleared to begin scrimmaging, according to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers could be primed to make a leap sooner rather than later if they can make some strong signings over the summer.
Oklahoma City Thunder: A
The Oklahoma City Thunder may have pulled off highway robbery Thursday night.
Although it briefly appeared as though the Orlando Magic were merely selecting Domantas Sabonis at No. 11 overall, the Thunder flipped the NBA on its side when they agreed to swap Serge Ibaka for the rights to Sabonis, Victor Oladipo and Ersan Ilyasova, according to Wojnarowski.
While Ibaka is a strong get for a Magic team that has long coveted a shot-blocking complement to a below-the-rim player in Nikola Vucevic, he has just one year remaining on his deal, per Spotrac.
Conversely, the Thunder acquired a potential backcourt cornerstone to pair with Russell Westbrook (and perhaps Kevin Durant should he return), who could conceivably be under team control for years to come.
At present, Oladipo has one guaranteed year left before he's due a qualifying offer, but if the Thunder do extend one when the time rolls around, they will retain the right to match all offers for the eventual restricted free agent.
And if the Thunder are able to keep Oladipo in the fold long term without watching any of their core pieces fly the coop, OKC will have a chance to wreak some serious havoc on the defensive end. Westbrook is already a physical monster who can hound opposing ball-handlers, and Oladipo has the frame (6'4'', 210 pounds) necessary to become a dynamite partner in crime on the perimeter.
The Oklahoman's Anthony Slater noted the Thunder, on paper, can now roll out a staggering five-man unit that figures to fluster opponents:
Factor in the additions of Ilyasova and a polished big with an NBA-ready low-post repertoire in Sabonis, and the Thunder bolstered their depth in a big way for what could amount to a one-year rental for the Magic.
Los Angeles Clippers: B+

Quietly, the Los Angeles Clippers had themselves a productive evening while chaos consumed several other clubs in the middle of the first round.
Doc Rivers' squad entered the night needing to add depth behind Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan in the frontcourt, and it came away with a big prize in North Carolina's Brice Johnson toward the end of the first round.
"Best rebounder in the draft," scouts told Campus Rush's Seth Davis. "Quick off his feet. Best paint finisher in college this year, so I don't see how that guy fails."
Considering the Clippers ranked 25th in bench rebounding last season, per HoopsStats.com, Johnson fits the bill.
The Clippers doubled down on size in the second round when they swung a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans that netted them Maryland Terrapins big man Diamond Stone, according to Wojnarowski.
With Cole Aldrich slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, adding a productive college big such as Johnson and an upside-laden prospect in Stone should give the Clippers plenty to be happy about as they seek to fortify the rest of their roster in the weeks ahead.
