Riding high after handing defending champions Spain their first defeat at the European Championship since 2004, Croatia will be looking to extend their current unbeaten streak to 11 games when they face Portugal in the round of 16 Saturday as small betting favorites at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark.
Match Odds: Portugal +220, Croatia +164, Draw +205 (Matchup Report)
Fresh off a first-place finish on the Group D table, Croatia will be gunning for their first-ever victory in Euros knockout stage action as they take on Portugal. The Croatians sit at +900 on the updated odds to win Euro 2016, with Portugal just a step behind them at +1000.
The Blazers recorded a stunning 2-1 upset win over heavily-favored Spain in their group-stage finale, edging out the two-time defending European champs as huge +340 underdogs to remain undefeated in 10 contests ahead of Saturday afternoon's matchup at Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Lens.
After being denied a victory in their group-stage clash with the Czech Republic, surrendering a pair of late goals in a 2-2 draw, Croatia responded with a solid defensive performance against Spain, earning their first victory over La Furia in 22 years.
Croatia now face a huge challenge against another Iberian opponent with a record of success at the European championships, as they seek their first-ever win over Portugal.
These two sides have met on three occasions since Croatia gained membership in FIFA and UEFA in 1993, with Portugal coming out on top in each, including a 3-0 win in group-stage action at Euro 96.
Portugal also recorded clean-sheet victories over Croatia in international friendly matchups in 2005 and 2013 but can expect to face a much greater challenge in this weekend's game with the Blazers.
The Portuguese have advanced at least as far as the semifinal in three of their past four appearances at the Euros, finishing as runners-up in 2004, but have yet to find their groove at this year's event.
Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo publicly vented his frustration following a 1-1 draw with Iceland in their group-stage opener and was unable to capitalize on a penalty kick late in a 0-0 draw with Austria.
Ronaldo eventually broke through with a pair of markers in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Hungary, but a porous Portugal defense proved to be the difference in that match and a source for concern. The team now prepares to face a Croatian side that has scored 26 total goals during their current unbeaten stretch, including a 10-0 rout of San Marino in their final pre-tournament contest.
Portugal vs. Croatia Prediction: 2-1 Croatia
