Mats Hummels Officially Completes Transfer to Bayern Munich from Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund announced on Tuesday that centre-back Mats Hummels has officially secured a summer move to Bayern Munich.

Bayern provided details on Hummels' new contract with the Bundesliga champions:

On April 25, Bild (h/t the Daily Star's Marc Williams) reported the switch would be worth £24 million, with Hummels earning around £8 million per year.

Dortmund had been braced for the transfer, which sees their captain move to their main title rivals. Club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky Deutschland on April 26, per Sky Sports: "He still has unfinished business with [Bayern]. His father, his mother and his brother all live in Munich. His girlfriend comes from Munich, he's from Munich too—so a whole lot of components have already come together."

The deal will disappoint a host of Europe's top clubs. Manchester United have long been linked with Hummels—who has just a season left on his current Dortmund deal—while Barcelona and Liverpool have also reportedly been interested in the World Cup winner, per David Anderson of the Mirror.

Hummels came through the youth ranks at Bayern and briefly played for their senior side before moving to Dortmund on loan in January 2008, making a permanent transfer for €4 million in 2009.

He won two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund and was a runner-up in the Champions League, staying loyal to the club despite consistent links with moves elsewhere over the last couple of seasons.

However, Bundesliga writer Alex Chaffer suspects he is eager to have a better chance of winning the Champions League. For such a goal, there are few better options than a switch to Bayern.
