Super Bowl 2016: Halftime Performers, Date and Odds for Broncos vs. Panthers

Nate LoopJan 25, 2016

Two tremendous defenses will collide in Super Bowl 50 when the Denver Broncos take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Feb. 7 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Pass-rushers Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware and the rest of the Broncos' superlative defense put on a masterclass in the AFC Championship Game, sacking Tom Brady four times and creating relentless pressure en route to a 20-18 win over the New England Patriots.

The Panthers defense turned Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer into a quivering mess Sunday. Palmer threw four interceptions and lost two fumbles, and the Panthers offense did more than enough to secure the win in a 49-15 smackdown.

The stage is set for what should be a very competitive game. Here's a rundown of the key info for Super Bowl 50.

Halftime Show

Even if scoring does come at a premium during the game, the halftime show should make up for any entertainment deficits. According to Theoden Janes of the Charlotte ObserverBruno Mars is reportedly set to join Coldplay and Beyonce for the halftime extravaganza.

The star-studded show will be more than worth it if it can get people dancing like the two Super Bowl quarterbacks, per Bleacher Report:

Beyonce performed at halftime for Super Bowl 47 in New Orleans, while Bruno Mars played his hits the next year at Super Bowl 48 in New Jersey.

Odds, Game Preview

The Panthers' strong second half was a marked improvement from their 31-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round, so it perhaps comes as little surprise that they are the early betting favorites. Per Odds Shark, the Panthers are 4.5-point favorites. While the teams' respective performances in the conference championships indicate a defensive struggle in the Super Bowl, the over/under is a healthy 45 points.

Much of the chatter will focus on the two quarterbacks, Broncos signal-caller Peyton Manning and Panthers leader Cam Newton, who are squaring off in what is essentially a generational battle, per ESPN's Adam Schefter:

They also happen to be the first two QBs taken No. 1 overall to play against each other in the big game, per NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano.

But really, this game is about defensive mastery. This is a terrifying statistic from Sports Illustrated's Doug Farrar:

Deadspin's Patrick Redford chronicled the massive impact Miller had during the AFC Championship Game:

"

Stats don’t always accurately capture the contributions of elite linebackers, but Miller had a gaudy line: two-and-a-half sacks (the most in Broncos playoff history), an interception, two tackles for a loss, four hits on Tom Brady, and a deflected pass. He was utterly unblockable this afternoon, and he put the fear of God into Brady on basically every pass play, whether or not he ended up sacking him.

"

With Ware healthy and motoring, pass protectors just have a terrible time protecting both edges. Running backs Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert can only chip one guy at a time, and the Panthers aren't going to be calling many pass plays that keep tight end Greg Olsen in to block.

Fortunately, Carolina can blunt the Broncos' efforts with a strong running game and Newton's mobility. Stewart has racked up 189 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries in the postseason, looking very fresh after missing three games with a leg injury.

Newton is a fine runner in his own right and has the mobility to evade pass rushers and make throws. The Broncos might not need to send extra rushers with Miller and Ware in imperious form, but if they do, watch out. Newton has generally been excellent against the blitz all season and certainly was so against the Cardinals, per ESPN's John Clayton:

"

What isn't said enough is how complete he has become as a quarterback. This year, Newton completed 59.8 percent of his passes against the blitz. Naturally, he expected to be blitzed heavy by the Arizona Cardinals. They blitzed. Newton burned them. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Newton competed 60 percent of his passes against the blitz Sunday, had 12.7 yards per attempt on those throws, and threw two touchdown passes.

"

While those are strong numbers, he may have trouble finding targets when Denver brings pressure. Cornerbacks Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib are more than capable of shutting down Panthers wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Philly Brown. With the health of the Broncos safeties in question, it could be up to Olsen and big-bodied rookie receiver Devin Funchess to keep the passing game going.

As for the Broncos offense, Manning is doing impressions of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith these days to manage games, but that's more than okay as long as he doesn't turn the ball over. The future Hall of Famer threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns against New England, his first scoring throws since Nov. 8 against the Indianapolis Colts. He's turnover free in his last three appearances, but the Panthers are certainly going to test that streak.

Safety Kurt Coleman picked off Palmer twice on Sunday, while linebacker Luke Kuechly managed his second pick-six of the playoffs. Cornerback Josh Norman is one of the league's premier shutdown corners. He'll be matched up with either Demaryius Thomas or Emmanuel Sanders—or both—potentially cutting down half the field for Manning.

Broncos running back C.J. Anderson is going to need to keep up his recent solid string of performances, which may prove difficult against a resolute Panthers run defense that proved effective against the Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch and the Cardinals' David Johnson in these playoffs.

Carolina did suffer a blow in the NFC Championship Game. Linebacker Thomas Davis suffered a broken arm early in the game, per Steve Reed of the Associated Press, but the veteran is hopeful he can still play in the Super Bowl.

"I believe in me," Davis said, per Reed. "This is something that if it comes down to a pain tolerance and playing through it, I will be there. I guarantee to you."

The Panthers can certainly use the 32-year-old's strong instincts and veteran acumen in the Super Bowl. Manning is still a master at reading defenses and adjusting plays at the line of scrimmage. Carolina's preparation and planning have to be airtight, even if Denver isn't a threat to score many points.
