Roy Jones Jr. Withdraws from Fight with Tony Moran
Roy Jones Jr. was slated to meet Tony Moran in the ring on Sept. 12 in Liverpool, England, but the 46-year-old fighter has reportedly withdrawn from next week's fight at Aintree Equestrian Centre.
According to BoxingScene.com, Jones (62-8, 45 KOs) didn't appear at the airport for his flight to England and the fight was ultimately called off.
"I'm extremely disappointed and saddened by the whole thing," fight promoter Stephen Vaughan said, per BoxingScene. "We had invested a lot of money and time into this event, as we wanted to make it a great occasion for the fans and the game alike."
Additionally, Vaughan told BoxingScene that he will seek legal consultation following Jones' late withdrawal.
Although an official reason for Jones' withdrawal has yet to be announced, BoxingScene reported Vaughn Boxing promotions has been told Jones has obtained a shot at a world title.
After Krzysztof Glowacki (25-0, 16 KOs) defeated Marco Huck via an 11th-round knockout in August, Jones went public with his desire to trade blows with the Polish puncher in a title fight.
"Glowacki already got the phone call that he got what I want," Jones said on Aug. 24, according to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. "He already got the call. I made the call immediately that night. You beat [Huck]. I want that. That's mine. You took it from him -- now I got to get it from you."
While official word has yet to be handed down regarding any future fights for Jones, next week's event in Liverpool is slated to go on as scheduled.
There will be 16 fights in total on the card, and it will now be headlined by a super bantamweight title tilt between Paul Economides (17-5, 4 KOs) and Prosper Ankrah (24-5, 15 KOs). With Economides looking to string together a fifth-straight win and Ankrah desperate to get back in the win column following a March loss to Ryo Akaho there should still be plenty of fireworks without Jones.
