Adrian Peterson Attends Vikings OTAs: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Mike ChiariJun 2, 2015

Adrian Peterson, who was indicted on child abuse charges in September and placed on the commissioner's exempt list—he was officially reinstated April 16—joined the Minnesota Vikings for organized team activities Tuesday.

There had been speculation that he would never suit up for the Vikings again, but ESPN's Josina Anderson reported the six-time All-Pro will be back in action after originally opting to sit out.

"I've been around a lot of these guys a lot of years and he's one of the top guys I've been around. He just comes out and looks like he hasn't missed a day," Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner said on June 4, via Sean d'Oliveira of CBS Sports.

The Vikings posted video of the running back coming out onto the field:

The 30-year-old provided a statement to ESPN.com's Ben Goessling explaining his decision.

"I'm returning because I want to," Peterson wrote. "I'm a part of this football team, and I owe it to the guys I play with and to our coaches. I was planning on coming in this week, and I'm looking forward to getting back on the field. It's what I love to do."

Goessling also noted that Peterson decided to come back after talking to head coach Mike Zimmer. NFL Network's Albert Breer gave more detail on Zimmer's role in the process:

Pro Football Talk and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport provided comments from Zimmer, who said, "We welcome him with open arms, unequivocally. I'm proud of Adrian in that all he had to go through last year. We're ready to get back to football."

"The relationship is good. It's love. I made a mistake," Peterson said, via Tom Pelissero of USA Today regarding his relationship with the organization.

Zimmer said no adjustments were made to Peterson's contract to prompt his return, per Pro Football Talk, and noted the team did not discuss trading the star running back, via Pelissero

Peterson commented on the trade and retirement speculation, saying, "With everything going on in my life at that time, I didn't really know what I wanted," via Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports.

Peterson said he doesn't want to be anywhere else and is happy to be with the Vikings, per Brian Hall of Fox Sports North.

AL.com's Mark Inabinett provided more of Peterson's comments: "My son's doing good. He's still very active. He's a very intelligent young man." Breer added Peterson said his son was the first person he apologized to following the incident.

Peterson's change of heart comes on the heels of an airing of grievances on Twitter last week in which he focused on the one-sided nature of NFL contracts.

While some might agree with AP's viewpoint, the fact remains he would have left a ton of money on the table had he decided against returning to play for the Vikings. Because of that, Ross Tucker of NBCSN never doubted Peterson would ultimately be clad in purple leading up to the 2015 season:

Peterson also made it clear he wanted to be there for his teammates and coaches, telling Goessling:

"

I've been watching this game from the sidelines for far too long. My teammates and coaches are important to me. Those relationships matter, and I owe it to those guys. I knew I wanted to come in this week. I had a family obligation last week but I'm ready to put on a Vikings uniform again and get back to work.

"

After missing all but one regular-season game last season, Peterson is poised to return to a starting role with the Vikings, and his presence automatically makes them a threat in the competitive NFC North.

Overtaking the likes of the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions won't be easy, but with a promising quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater and an emerging defense led by Anthony Barr to go along with Peterson, Minnesota will be an entertaining team in 2015.
