WWE SummerSlam 2014: Power Ranking Most Likely Swerves at Marquee PPV

Anthony MangoAug 5, 2014

WWE's SummerSlam pay-per-view is one of the biggest shows of the year, and the 2014 edition of the event is certain to get fans talking.

Several titles are on the line, and some rivalries have heated up to a boiling point.

With every event, fans are going to head into it with certain expectations in mind and predictions of what is going to happen.

But while some things may be predictable, there's always a chance WWE will hit everyone with a swerve and not do what is expected.

Anything can happen, from the Money in the Bank being cashed in on John Cena or Brock Lesnar to matches being changed on the spot, to even heel or face turns.

Out of the many different things that might go on at the event, which are the most likely to go against the grain of what the WWE Universe is assuming will go down?

Let's take a look at some potential twists and turns that we could be in store for.

4. John Cena Defeats Brock Lesnar

1 of 4

Ever since his return to WWE, fans have been speculating about when Brock Lesnar would win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship again.

For the past few years, this has been put on the back burner.

However, there has been an air of certainty toward the build for SummerSlam that surrounds the idea of Lesnar as the champion.

So far, nearly everything that has been rumored has come to fruition, ranging from Lesnar getting a title shot to even who his opponent would be when the title was still vacated.

John Cena is being positioned in a way that seems like he is destined to lose.

Lesnar is a beast who defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXX, and The Authority has gone out of its way to send him to take care of Cena.

Having Lesnar win would somewhat undo his loss to Cena during his re-debut, and it would entice fans to renew their subscriptions to the WWE Network in preparation for Night of Champions in September.

But what if the clear and obvious plan doesn't quite pull through that way?

If Cena retains, it would be a shock to everyone who is prepared to see a title change.

Shock for the sake of it isn't necessarily always good, but virtually nothing beats the value of a surprise to get people buzzing.

At the moment, Lesnar feels like a sure bet, but the card is always subject to change, and things can always go in a different direction.

3. Paige Defeats AJ Lee

2 of 4

Typically, the edge is given to the champion to win a match and retain his or her title.

AJ Lee is still fresh as the champion due to her relatively recent win and her long absence without being seen on WWE programming in general.

However, that does not mean that she will be the guaranteed victor here.

Paige has been reinvigorated now that she has turned heel.

Perhaps the plan all along was for her to drop the title to facilitate this and then win it back soon after.

There is more of a chance that this title will change hands than John Cena's staying with him, as WWE pretty much has nothing to lose by having Lee lose.

She had already lost the championship to Paige in the past, and having it happen a second time won't render her a total weakling by any means.

There is nothing that states that Paige needs to leave with the belt, but there's nothing preventing it from happening, either.

2. Bray Wyatt Defeats Chris Jericho

3 of 4

Now that Chris Jericho has ensured that Erick Rowan will not be ringside for his match against Bray Wyatt, it's easy to assume that he will win just as he did at Battleground.

After all, if Wyatt couldn't get the job done without his family before, why could he do it here?

The Eater of Worlds still has some fight in him when he goes solo, so he shouldn't be counted out completely.

If WWE wishes to extend this feud into Night of Champions, Wyatt will need to get a win here to prolong it.

Otherwise, he'll have lost twice to Jericho and would not look as threatening as he needs to be.

On paper, Jericho seems like the sure bet, having won their previous match and having a much more storied and impressive career than Wyatt.

But in WWE, what makes the most sense doesn't happen all the time.

1. Jack Swagger Defeats Rusev

4 of 4

Rusev has remained undefeated in singles competition since joining the main roster earlier this year.

Jack Swagger, on the other hand, has floundered and lost more matches than he's won.

Even still, the matches he's won have typically been due to dubious ways and blatant cheating.

With this match, however, there is a loophole to have Swagger come out on top but not make Rusev tap out or get pinned.

Capturing your flag is the way to win and doesn't necessarily reflect poorly upon the loser—particularly if the end result comes about due to interference from Lana and Zeb Colter.

After WWE came under some attacks by those who criticized the political storyline, it may be a sign of good faith to have The Real American defy the odds and win.

What surprises do you feel we're in store for?

Is there anything in particular that you think will happen that you are hoping goes the opposite way?
