Ryan RudnanskyJun 2, 2018

Georgia running back Isaiah Crowell was dismissed from the Bulldogs on Friday after being arrested on weapons charges in the morning, according to Gentry Estes of 247 Sports.

Estes tweeted on Friday:

Crowell, who rushed for 850 yards and five touchdowns in his freshman season for Georgia, was arrested and booked at 3:37 a.m. on Friday by Athens Clarke-County police, per Estes. He's being charged with possession of a concealed weapon, having a weapon in a school zone and having an altered ID mark on a weapon.

Fletcher Page of Scout.com explained the seriousness of the charges on Friday:

"

According to state law, a person charged w/ criminal use of an article w/ an altered ID mark faces a min of 1 year, max of 5, IF convicted.

Per Estes, Crowell was reportedly arrested at 2:20 a.m. on Friday after police officers searched his vehicle for marijuana.

Athens Clarke-County Police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow said, via Scout.com:

"

He came through, and as officers talked with him, they smelled an odor of marijuana. So they got all the occupants out, did a consent search of the person and a consent search of the vehicle. No marijuana was found, but during the search of the vehicle a handgun was found under the driver's seat, and it was determined that gun had an altered serial number. So Crowell, who was the driver, was arrested and charged with the three charges.

"

Georgia teammates Sheldon Dawson, Quintavius Harrow, Josh Harvey-Clemons and Blake Tibbs were also in the vehicle, but they weren't charged with anything.

Crowell, a promising NFL prospect following his first season at Georgia, led the Bulldogs with 185 carries in 2011-2012. He had four games of over 100 yards rushing, but had only three carries for three yards in Georgia's 33-30 triple-overtime loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl.

In the University of Georgia's student-athlete handbook, a felony arrest can result in "immediate suspension from athletic competition," per Scout.com.
