Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Why Hope for Dream Match Still Exists

Andrew KulhaJun 10, 2012

To those who have been patiently waiting for the boxing dream matchup between superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather: There is still hope.

While some may feel that the possibility of this bout eventually taking place were squashed when Timothy Bradley beat Pac-Man on a controversial split decision, there is still a scenario that could see this fight through.

For what it's worth, Roger Mayweather—Floyd's Uncle—still feels that the fight can happen, according to David Mayo of mlive.com:

Roger Mayweather, in the first public response from Team Mayweather to Bradley's split-decision upset of Pacquiao in Las Vegas, said the potential for any big fight is “based on opinion anyway.”

“If people think that Pacquiao won, they could still make the fight with Floyd because people will still buy it,” Roger Mayweather, who trains his nephew, said this morning from his Las Vegas home. “It depends on what people think about how the fight went. I think that's just how it is.”

Roger Mayweather also states later in Mayo's article that a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather match would be more likely if Pacquiao were to beat Bradley in their rematch, which looks to be penciled in on November 10th of this year.

In that case, Pac-Man would have to beat the man that just beat him, which would at the very least prove that he's still a worthy competitor for Mayweather. If Pacquiao were to lose again though, perhaps Bradley would be the man that Mayweather sets his sights on.

It seems like when all is said and done, this dream matchup will come down to the status of Pacquiao when Mayweather is ready to fight (he's currently serving a jail sentence) and whether or not Pac-Man would be deemed a worthy opponent.

If he can still be considered arguably the best in the world, I would think the chances of this match happening are high. If Bradley was to defeat Pac-Man again though, Pacquiao's elite status may be in question, which would make him an undesirable fight for Mayweather.

Why would he want to risk losing to a fighter that's not the best in the world? Especially when that fighter would be Pacquiao?

For now, we'll have to wait and see what happens, but at the very least, we know there's still hope for the dream matchup.
