Yuri Wright to Colorado: Why the Buffaloes Could Quickly Regret Taking Him
I'm sure you've all heard what Twitter and other social media sites can do to you. Especially if you're a celebrity or an athlete. You post something on the Internet and it's likely going to be there forever. Even if you hit the delete button, those two seconds shared with thousands of followers means they all have seen it, and it will be copied and shared with the rest of the world.
Apparently, one of this year's top cornerbacks in Yuri Wright didn't get the memo.
Last week, he was caught tweeting a few inappropriate tweets that included racial slurs. It received media attention and even though his Twitter account was later deleted, those tweets are still forever on the Internet.
Once those tweets went viral, he was expelled from his high school in New Jersey and the Michigan Wolverines decided to remove their offer on the table. This happened nearly a week ago, and with the Wolverines no longer in the running, Wright has decided to commit to the Colorado Buffaloes.
This move comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering he also had offers on the table from Notre Dame and his home-state school, Rutgers.
Colorado may quickly regret this move.
The first thing that comes to mind is this can't be the school he wanted to play for. Michigan seemed to be the team that was likely going to land him and since they pulled their offer off the table, I guess he settled for the Buffaloes. Both of these teams are heading in different directions. The Wolverines are now competing for BCS bowls and recruiting extremely well. Colorado has an OK recruiting class, but they've won only 11 games in the last three seasons combined.
So, if Wright felt comfortable to tweet that nonsense a week ago, what in the world would he be capable of doing when he's playing on a team he probably doesn't want to play for? Now, Colorado was the first school he visited back in December, but is that the school he really wanted to play for, or did Michigan make his mind up for him when they removed the offer?
We've seen it several times in years past where players act out when they don't want to be somewhere or that team isn't winning as much as that player would like. We're talking about a 4-star player here and he's the first player above three stars to commit to Colorado this whole recruiting class, according to most top recruiting sites.
Look, Wright could be a great kid who just made a terrible mistake that won't happen again. If that's the case, the Buffaloes really lucked out and may truly benefit from it. Or he could be a troubled kid that we see so often that could really tear this team apart.
Is the risk worth the reward? We'll find out soon enough.
